Blacks & Whites

Well, whites really. How do I set the camera to avoid loosing all detail in the whites within a group of other colours, ie where white is in the background and can't be moved.

How do you deal with whites when it is the main subject to avoid blowing all detail have also had the same problem with primary colours, particularly pure red that is reading 255. Black is not such a problem because you can add light, it is not always possible to reduce or deflect light when shooting white or pure colour outside.

Many thanks.

Re: Blacks & Whites

Try using the some -ve exposure compensation, this should stop you blowing the whites, or use manual and under expose a little on purpose.

Re: Blacks & Whites

Will try that Steven, I must get into the habit of taking 3 shot at different exposure, would you suggest increments of 1/3 or 1/2 think my camera will accommodate both, would rather try automatic so I know any errors are not just me miss-setting in the excitement of the moment, I'm easy to fluster.

Re: Blacks & Whites

I have mine set to 1/3, and generally keep my camera at -1/3 unless its sunny where I drop it to -2/3 or even -1.

The key is to take a shot and to use the histogram to decide on how to set the exp comp. My camera has a setting for the review where it flashes if the whites are blown and makes it really easy to adjust for it.

Re: Blacks & Whites

Don't think mine does the flashing thing, will show a histogram but if it is bright enough to bugger the whites it is too bright to see the screen. My camera will take 3 shots one at auto exposure, one - and one + so I may try that for a while then study the metadata till I am sure I understand what effect what I set will have. Thanks for the help.
