Nikon D100 - Is this good value?

I just saw an advert for a Nikon D100 plus lens, tripod and case for £250...would it be worth buying? I cant afford a D300, or D200 yet but would like a similar camera. Not sure if this thread is in the right category though, sorry.

Re: Nikon D100 - Is this good value?

The D100 is quite old now.. and tbh, I think the D40 is a better buy as you can get it with the kit lens for around that price and of course you get your warranty with it.

Edit: just noticed you already have the D40!

What are your reasons for wanting to upgrade? Would a better lens be a good choice instead?

Re: Nikon D100 - Is this good value?

D70 is better than D100. And I have had both D70 and D40, and D40 is no doubt the better one of the two of them. So I don't think that's a good value.

What's the reason for your upgrade?

Tommy why do you think a D40 is better than a D70? I can't see any reason for advantage?

I have a D70s and find it inferior to the D200 particularly in it's ability to produce some of the more subtle colours and it's it's ability to deal with the range of Ev values dark to light in the same shot. Having said that of course the D70 is a good camera and many shots wouldn't even show this up. I have used a D100 but not enough to comment on it's comparison to a D70 or D40.

Re: Nikon D100 - Is this good value?

I have not compared the D70 against the D100, but I have read comparisons online, all concluding that the D70 is the better one.

When I dig a little deeper in my head I guess I should have said that the image quality of the D40 and the D70 is pretty much the same, but the D40 is a 3(?) year newer model, and the layout of the menu's are a lot more "modern" and easier to use/learn. And the 2.5" LCD is way better than the old 2". And it's smaller and lighter and just feels better.

The D70 has a few advantages though. If you shoot with external flashes outdoors at mid day, you can sync at 1/1250th of a second instead of 1/250 as the D40 and most other bodies. The D70 also have built-in auto focus.

Re: Nikon D100 - Is this good value?

I think i should stick with my D40 then. I like it, except with my F1.8 50mm as it takes ages to get properly focused pics. But maybe the D100 wouldn't autofocus with it anyhow. Thanks for replying

I guess it's what you feel comfortable with. To me the D70s feels better and bigger and more professional than the D40 and as I expected the image qualty is probably the same or similar. The D40 has more amateur friendly menus but the D70 is more enthusiast and of course has an LCD top panel display and more dedicated buttons which means the menus aren't necessarily required. The internal AF motor is also useful. At the end of the day it's whatever we are comfortable with to get the shot.
