Thank you I have to manually zoom in or out with the lens, but I do keep it in auto focus, but I find that the closer Jack is the better quality the pic is

Re: New DSLR Ideas Please!

Just buy online instead - it's usually much cheaper Although I think Jessops will sometimes price match Dixons

hehehe! I'm terrible at haggling, but things really were much more expensive in the shops than online.. so my haggling would have had to be really good!

After handling the cameras and taking some pictures in the shops (Jacobs very helpful, Currys useless!), and weighing up the pros and cons (not many on either side!), I think I'm going to go with the Nikon D60. So now, all I have to do is:
  • Ring Dixons Online and double check that it's all UK stock
  • Find out whether the 18-55mm VR lens is worth getting
  • Check with Nikon that it's a qualifying lens for the cashback (which I think it is but I can't find it on their list)
  • Find out whether if you buy online the printed receipt you get is sufficient for the cashback
  • Read some more reviews just to make sure I've made the right choice!

Thanks so much everyone for your help on this - hugely appreciated!

I'd ring Nikon too - just to be on the safe side, just ask if they are one of their approved dealers. They did have list somewhere but I can't find it now :-/

Sure is! The non-VR one is awesome, and I've heard the VR one is even better

Yep it is

They won't want a reciept - there will be a 'warranty' slip in you box, and you have to fill it out and send half of it back to the address on that link I gave you

Re: New DSLR Ideas Please!

Your doing the right thing, at least you have seen and handled the camera to see if its comfortable to use. It is as you say finding the cheapest place, avoid imports from the far east for reasons I won't go into.
Getting a little bit excited now is my guess but now check on the speck. Try this link it is pretty well comprehensive on the D60

http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/spec.../nikon_d60.asp

This I know you will find interesting and I suggest you bookmark it for reference.it is a visual film guide to the camera

Re: New DSLR Ideas Please!

Thanks again everyone! Fantastic Azz, now I have even less to do! Bazza, both of those - really useful. The second is firmly in my bookmarks as I know I'll need it, being a complete noob! Thanks Kanikula! Can't wait to get some shots on here. I do feel a bit disloyal to my old faithful Kodak, so maybe I'll have to post a few shots from that first! The bloke I spoke to in one of the shops mentioned the same drawbacks of each camera that you did, so thanks for that. There really doesn't seem to be much in it between the two cameras, but somehow I'm drawn to the Nikon.. have no idea why!
