Which program do you use most...

OK, so on my antiquated D70 () I have the following available to me -

P - Program Mode
A - Aperture Mode
S - Shutter Mode
M - Manual Mode

Auto - Full Auto

Then I have a lot of scenic ones -

Portrait
Landscape
Macro
Sports
Night
AN Other
(Honestly don't know what that one is)

I have to say the camera tends to stay in full auto most of the time, altho I am starting to look outside of the auto mode, but still don't fully understand what each one is for

So the question is, which one do you use most on your camera and why?

Re: Which program do you use most...

When I want to just P&S I use the P mode. Then it depends what I want to adjust, aperture, shutter, or, if I'm feeling really creative, manual

I've never used the preset ones (like landscape, portrait etc).

Give those photography basics threads a go (post your results in them too) - they really do help you get familiarised with some of the modes

Re: Which program do you use most...

Currently, M. But that depends on how much control i have over the situation. For instance if i'm just shooting without flash and i don't have much time to find the exact setting i'd like, P is a great tool to have. I'd like to say i have a good amount of confidence in Nikon's Matrix metering system on the D300.

The greatest thing about using full manual is that i keep a constant shutter and only vary my aperture without worrying about how the meter interprets sudden changes in the light. The problem with that method is having to figure out the sweetspot for aperture at a given shutter first before taking 100 shots. But that skill is increasing over time.

You'd think "well, why not use S and let the meter take over for the aperture control"..but sometimes if you give up that control and there's a hotspot somewhere in your central frame, center-weight metering (which i like to use the most) is kinda conservative and does not like blown out highlights so it stops down the aperture too much.

Re: Which program do you use most...

I use mostly aperture priority these days - with shutter priority for most bird stuff, and often manual too - depending on the situation. I don't think I've used any of the auto or program modes for a long time...

Re: Which program do you use most...

I probably use full Manual the most these days. Being more 'into' landscapes than anything else - I have the time.

After that I probably use Aperture priority or Shutter priority the most.
