GPS in SLRs

Just wondering what YoP users thought about this.

Canon, and no doubt other manufacturers, are considering fitting camera bodies with GPS. So I guess your Lat/long will be stored in the Exif data.

Useful? If I was a surveyor or estate agent, then maybe.

Can you think of any uses for this?
Would you use it?
Would you buy a body over another for this feature?
Or is it a gimmick too far?

Alan.

Re: GPS in SLRs

I think it's a great idea, as sometimes I've been on walks and walked for hours and not known where I've ended up Would be nice to being to link it to something like google map to know the exact spot you took the photo

Re: GPS in SLRs

I've used GPS with photography at work - GIS (Geographical Information Systems) rely on field data coming back with acurate XYcoords. Throw in Z (altitude) and now you're talking.

Re: GPS in SLRs

Seems to be popular then?

I generally don't forget where I have been, or where something I photographed was, so GPS would not be useful for my photography.

I wonder who Canon canvassed to see if this was a good idea before spending development pounds on it? They must market research somewhere?

Re: GPS in SLRs

I geo-ref all my landscape shots on Flickr's map too so (although I know where they were taken) it would be handy for old pics that I'm not sure about.

Re: GPS in SLRs

Think there may be a use for map makers etc. but for the normal or professional photographer I can't see the need surely people do not forget where they took the image, if they do there is always that clever device known as a note book.

Can see that walkers would find it useful but in that case would they not have a pocket GPS designed to aid the walker, a photographer should not in general need one and I think it a gimmick.

EDIT: again had another thought and perhaps in 6 years time when sorting through old shots it may help to know not only the time and date the shot was taken but where, assuming you have not made note of it. So perhaps it would have it's uses in amongst the images IEXIP but a selling point, I don't think so.

Re: GPS in SLRs

By coincidence there was a news story this morning about a photographer who recovered her stollen camera when the thief took his own portrait. The camera linked to a wi-fi network close by and sent the photo to the lady's computer, complete with gps coordinates of the thief.
