My New Nikon D800 Is Defective

I'm sad to say my D800 that arrived 05/12/2012 was defective right out of the box. I've been back to the shop twice proving that the camera refuses to format memory cards using the standard tools menu selection. I've tried different memory cards, one card at a time and menu changes. No dice! The store manager at Camera World acknowledged that I was right so he placed a special order for a replacement and allowed me to use the existing camera until it arrives. I can format my cards By press the trash can button and mode button at the same time. That works. He understands I don't want a defective camera right out of the box. Who knows how long it will take for the replacement? No complaints, they're giving me a new one. I use Lexar cards by the way.

Oh that's a shame Bob. Hope the new one arrives soon, and it was nice of them to let you keep that one until it does - I would get it in writing though, just in case

I have it in writing with a copy of the order form. I'm glad it can still format the card with the two button combination. It's a minor glitch that demands replacement while the camera is still considered brand new. I return with the problem the same afternoon I picked up the camera so It's all well documented. I even showed the manager how to format cards with the two button method. He was amazed I knew that. I guess that's why I read the manual.

Re: My New Nikon D800 Is Defective

What a pain! Cameras are such technical and fragile things really - it's very easy for them to go wrong before you even get your hands on them.

Good luck with the new one!

That's a shame Bob after waiting so patiently.

At least it's not a problem that prevents you from actually using it and you can fire away happy in the knowledge that you'll get another new one.

Those are my sentiments exactly Phil, a minor inconvenience.

Re: My New Nikon D800 Is Defective

I've seen this problem mentioned before on other photo forums and I seem to recall that new firmware was released to correct this. Try google on this.

Not even mildly funny. My dealer dialed up his retailer's direct line to Nikon, as I stood waiting, and there is no updated firmware or even the ability for him to download the existing firmware.

Re: My New Nikon D800 Is Defective

This is not a memory card issue but a camera firmware issue. I've already wasted $56 on a Kingston 16gig memory card which is why I purchased the Lexar recommended cards at $128 a pop. I tried multiple memory cards as did the camera shop manager. A new camera is what is needed.
