Finlaystone waterfalls & landscapes

Revisited Finlaystone country estate today for some waterfall pics, and to try out my new Circular polariser filter. The weather was not good at all, it was very dull, grey and overcast (just right for waterfall piccies and had been raining in the morning. I had checked metcheck before I left but it was forecast for more rain, so I took a chance (not that far anyway) and left hoping for the best. Well, the rain stayed away and so I got my waterfall pics and some landscapes too. Although I did not need to use the CPL filter, I wanted to try it out anyway, just to see how effective it was for reducing reflections in the water and to see how it changed the colours in my images, well, I could see right away how it changed the colours, and lightness as I rotated it, the effect was more noticable when I used the 40d's live view mode. The images looked fantastic when I previewed them on the 40d, but when I seen them on my computer I was not so sure I liked them so much, the cpl filter appears to flatten the images, they are not so vibrant and punchy. I should have taken a few without the filter just to compare them. Of course the poor light would not have helped either, so,I'll keep using it for a while, and experiment with it some more before I give my final verdict on it

Re: Finlaystone waterfalls & landscapes

Great pictures. It's a great time of year now for this kind of thing with all the copper colours mixed with the green. Think i'm going to give waterfalls another go now i've got my new tripod.

Re: Finlaystone waterfalls & landscapes

Those are wonderful! I guess you have to trade off the show shutter speed you need to to get the blur on the water and a faster shutter speed to prevent too much motion blur on the plants/leaves as they move in the wind. I love the effect in the top four ( 1 and 4 especially) - I am hoping to take some shots of a waterfall at some point but the area is still closed due to F&M and they aren't looking to lift the restrictions on that particular area for another 3 weeks or so (provisionally)

Many thanks

I notice you used a 10 second shutter speed in a couple of them, was it a particularly fast waterfall then? I assume that you used your 17 - 40? (looking at the different focal lengths).
