Re: UV or not UV?

I'm in the no filter camp, Nikon spent an absolute fortune on getting my lenses as best as they could be, the right glass and the right coatings I'm not gonna mess that up putting a filter on the front of it. Plus the fact that the glass that makes up your lens is pretty much gonna take care of the UV light, not really much point.

As for the protection issue, I can see the sense but a lens hood will do a lot to protect the front element. I have taken out insurance on my lenses for damage for a similar amount to a good quality filter so if front element was damaged enough to affect the image I'd be getting a new lens.

Agree totally thats what I pay insurance for, damage ect and I do believe the quality is compromised, I admit slightly but indeed compromised.

Only realised this this week though but glad I did.

Re: UV or not UV?

I too have a UV filter on every lens for protection but may change to a polarizer only. The reasoning behind this choice is if you add too much glass in front of your prime lens to risk vignetting your photos, ie. the corners will be darker than the rest of the photo. One solution is to use only a UV with no other filter attached or buy a higher quality, thinner polarizing filter & use it exclusively.
