Why I love the D3 and D700 - I fear no darkness

November wedding in Windsor. 11th century church and a very grey day meant poor light inside. Vicar was quite happy for me to shoot the ceremony.

With 2 caveats - no flash, and it was in candlelight.

That meant to have any chance of stopping movement and getting 1/125s I was at ISO 10,000 and f1.6:

More than usable for album work.

It also gives me 1600 performance like this:

I didn't use flash at all for the dance as I knew they had something special planned. So I thought it essential to show motion there. I like them and they are all at ISO 6400

So if you're looking at a D700 - you get the same performance for £1500.

Guy, fantastic love this wedding, they look a great couple too. It is amazing that you can achieve shots like that at ISO 10,000 Amazing, sorry repeating myself.

You definitely have a "style" too, I love the sharp focus in the Bridal colour portrait and the softness surrounding the bride, it compliments the softness of her feathers on her dress. The laughing, twirling dress shot is wonderful

I love this style too. Quality wedding photography and I'd guess a well heeled couple to commission a wedding like that. Whatever, it's such a big day for people. I do find it amazing that so many non-photographic people miss the point of a talented photographer and think they can ask anyone they know with a camera and the results they get are 'wedding photographs'.

These pics are great and I'm sure on screen they are a shadow of the original prints presented bound in a nice quality album.

'tis a b*gger though that 10 years plus into digital photography for the masses we are still having to pay £1500 for a body that can take pictures equal to a £100 film SLR!

Thanks again. I have to say that Heather was the best bride I shot this year. She's a trained dancer and had such poise and elegance it's not true. Just a wonderful couple.

Thanks very much - this was a joy to shoot really, even chasing the light all day in late November.

You're not wrong about the costs though

Re: Why I love the D3 and D700 - I fear no darkness

I was going to wait until the summer, but after seeing your pics again I want one now!!

I've saved up just enough for a D700 and 50mm G - but that will clear me out completely so no new toys or video games for quite some time!

Reasons to get one now:

Save perhaps up to £200? (Is that how much we think they'll go up by?)
Get a free copy of NX2

Decisions decisions

Thanks for the write-up Guy!

wow! am totally envious! I want a D700 more than ever now! shame we can't justify it at the moment (well, I can - but we can't afford it at all - despite all the justification!). Damn having only just spent about 2k on camera crap. Wish I'd hung on a bit now!
