What Macro Lens do you use?

I'm planning on getting a macro lens. Been looking at the Canon 100mm f2.8 L macro. A bit pricey but seems to be a great lens. I'd be interested to hear what lenses others use and any comments on the Canon lens.

Re: What Macro Lens do you use?

Good choice and it will work with your Kenko extension tubes for greater than life size.

Here's a couple of shots I have taken with lens

Re: What Macro Lens do you use?

Thanks Steve.

Great shots. Were they taken with or without extension tubes? If without then I'm really impressed with the IQ.

Re: What Macro Lens do you use?

Hi Zounds

Your lens is similar in focal length as the Canon, do you use it just for macro or other work?

Re: What Macro Lens do you use?

Hi Paul

Do you mean the "L" or none "L"?

I have the none "L" and I can confirm that it is a razor sharp lens when used for macro or as a normal 100mm lens. It is every bit as sharp as any of my other fixed focal length "L" lenses I own.

The only real advantage of the newer L version is the 4 stop "IS".

I'll try and get some links sorted out to some examples taken with my EF100, f2.8, macro and add them to this thread later.

Re: What Macro Lens do you use?

I use mine for all sorts of things - I use it for macro of course, but also for portraiture, dogs at shows, my pet rats, occasionally birds if I can get close enough

Re: What Macro Lens do you use?

Greenie, the first one was with the extension tubes and the second was just the lens on it's own.

Mine is the none IS version and it was always known as in the trade as the an "L" lens without the red stripe. It is sharp and has a nice contrast and colour rendition.

I have used mine for other purposes and on the 5D & 5D MkII which are full size sensors it is a very good portrait lens. Not that good for action shots though as the AF motor, although silent, is a little slow.

Even with the new model now available I would have to be told a good story to change

Re: What Macro Lens do you use?

I had the Canon MP-E 65mm f/2.8 1-5x for a while but it really was a specialist lens - more of a microscope than a lens. It's an amazing bit of kit and quite unique - a lot of the amazing really close up macro shots you see are taken with this lens and it has a very dedicated following. The smallest you can manage is life size on the sensor and the largest it 5X life size so you can't really photograph anything much larger than a fly. Also without a ring flash you have to use wide apertures which result in a depth of field of just a fraction on a mm so many people 'stack' multiple images.

The Canon 100mm f2.8 L macro is a much more managable lens and if price is an issue you can pick up the forerunner (non L version) for much less. One nice feature is it's clever IS system.

The Sigma 105mm f/2.8 EX DG Macro is also a popular model for both Nikon and Canon users as is the Sigma 150mm f/2.8 APO Macro DG.
