Sony will also release a 24.6mp flagship DSLR ( probably called the a900 ) later this year, to go head to head with the Canon 1DsMkIII, so they are definitely serious players in the market.
Just because Canon and Nikon have been around for a while, doesn't mean they can't be challenged CC.
My advice is this;
Listen to what others on the forum have to say, after all, it's these guys who are using the cameras every day, so there is no one better to help you when looking for advice. They should only tell you how good or bad their own camera is, and not put down any other make or model, especially if they haven't owned one.
My own personal experience involved hours and hours of trawling the net, reading review after review before I finally decided on the Sony A700. I went to Jessops to buy my new camera, but the guy behind the counter was so determined to sell me a Canon 40D. I humoured him by trying out everything he had to offer , but 45 mins later, with put down after put down of the Sony, he finally gave in. And to my amazment, he then started to concede that the Sony was superior to the 40D in some ways.
It was only when he went through the back to get my new kit, that I noticed the Canon 40D & 400D boxes, stacked floor to ceiling. He was clearly on some kind of commission to sell as many Canons as he could.
God...even the Jessops bag that I carried my new Sony home in, had a huge Canon advertisement splattered all over it!
If you have your heart set on the Olympus, go to a decent photography shop, and ask to try it out. See how it feels in your hand, and compare the feel of it to others within your price band.
You'll know when you have picked the right camera.
I also think that the camera is only as good as the person who operates it.
