In the U.S. that lens alone sells for over $1200. I've always trusted this web site for equipment reviews. http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/1755.htm

Re: Nikon 17-55mm f/2.8G ED-IF AF-S DX

The lens and D200 would typically sell for around £800-£900 secondhand. The 17-55 is probably the best lens you can get for a DX format Nikon. Assuming it is in good condition then great bargain but sets the alarm bells ringing for me...literally. No box, charger etc. often typical of a stolen item. Hopefully not Hayley, but it is worth bearing in mind. Few people that could afford that item in the first instance, or knew what they had in their hands would sell it so cheap. Likewise most people wouldn't hand over £250 without knowing the approximate value of an item they were buying.

You can get third party battery and chargers from Ebay or elsewhere. The D200 should get at least 200-300 shots, maybe a lot more. My D300 and D700 are more efficient off the same battery, the D200 is known to use more battery power so I am only guessing, but I get 500-600, maybe loads more.

Re: Nikon 17-55mm f/2.8G ED-IF AF-S DX

if it was stolen i cant really do anything? can i .... would it get me in trouble?
for me i thought d200 with a lens, 250 bargin, then i looked at the lens when i bought it as both are in extremely good condition and was shocked about price tag for new and couldnt stop smiling afterwards.

Re: Nikon 17-55mm f/2.8G ED-IF AF-S DX

Knowing or believing goods to be stolen...

Basics of the offence of handling/receiving stolen goods. Yes it could get you arrested, although at this point you seem to be of the honest belief that the gear wasn't stolen.

You may have a few questions to answer in relation to the price, in relation to considering if you thought it was "too good"

All that depends on the stuff actually being stolen, which I would hope that you would think that it wasn't from who you bought it from and knowledge of them.

Re: Nikon 17-55mm f/2.8G ED-IF AF-S DX

well i dont know the man personally which could be a bad thing, and i cant see it being robbed as apparently the camera came with 2 more lens which is he selling separately, my bundle came with 2 batterys, 3 memory cards, its body and its cap and the lens and both caps? if it was robbed wouldnt it just be the camera and lens?

Re: Nikon 17-55mm f/2.8G ED-IF AF-S DX

You could try going into the menu of the camera, to see if the owner added any copyright info, if it is a different name to the person you bough it from, that might answer a few questions. Also, camera, lenses all have serial numbers, most people who are serious about photography, have kept a note of them, have the paperwork, boxes etc, and wouldn't normally sell them on unboxed etc.Without charger etc. Plus, if something gets nicked, you have a serial number to help try and track the lens/camera down, if sold on, say, on Ebay etc.

We can only guess that it sounds dodgy, only you know if it was too good to be true, bloke in a pub situation or bargain on Ebay etc. someone you know, or noet etc. TBH even if you were desperate for money, you could easily and quickly , get half the original price for that lens, quickly by going on a legit forum or sellerwhich is why most of us are maybe suspicious

if it was robbed wouldnt it just be the camera and lens?

Not if someone snatched ,someone's camera bag, if someone nicked mine, they'd get loads of goodies.

Re: Nikon 17-55mm f/2.8G ED-IF AF-S DX

Not wishing to convince you it was stolen, but there are numerous ways in which gear maybe.

Burglary, robbery or theft from vehicle.

Burglary likely to be all the gear, cam, cards, lenses, charger etc.

Robbery likely to be just cam, lenses and cards

Theft from M/V a variation of the 2.

Is the guy a known burglar, robber? was he a 'tog and seemed to know what he was talking about?

Its probably something you never know, only real way would be to search all records of stolen property at surrounding police forces or with Nikon as pro gear can be registered.
