Re: Canon Telephoto EF 85mm f/1.8 USM

The EF 85mm f/1.8 USM is a very good lens and a great portrait lens on a full frame camera.

As you will be using a cropped sensor camera the 85mm immediately becomes a 136mm lens. Now for a general, always on the camera walk around lens I would say that is too long.

Plonk a 2x converter on it and we are looking at 272mm lens. Long.

For the uses you have stated, namely portrait, general & landscape I would have thought your 50mm would be more suitable.

It is often quoted that the ideal telephoto for portrait is 80mm on full frame. The 50mm you have on a cropped sensor would give you exactly that, 80mm.

If I were in your shoes I think I would be looking at upgrading your 18-55mm lens or supplementing it with the Canon 28mm f/1.8 USM http://www.kenrockwell.com/canon/lenses/28mm-f18.htm which with the crop factor would give you a fast standard lens (49mm).
