Re: Hmmmmm

I think it's called the nifty fifty.... because it's a very good lens for the price and a bit nifty, and it rhymes with fifty

So it is known as the nifty fifty..... I am probably totally wrong too

Re: Hmmmmm

I have the equivalent lens for the Canon.

I bought mine purely because of the speed, F1.8 was good for my Live photography.

For the money it is a good lens, it takes a while to get used to the fixed 50mm size, which means you won't be doing many architecture/landscape shots with it, but for most other things it's great, and for people like me who love a really narrow DoF F1.8 is great.

I have the Canon F1.2 85mm now, and while it is a much better lens, it still reminds me of my 50mm when I use it.

I don't know what your budget it, but certainly for Canon there is a 1.4 variant as well.

Re: Hmmmmm

WW - Nikon do a 1.4 version too, it's over twice the price tho (I almost bought it a while ago but changed my mind at the 21 day wait!).

Grant, KK has 50mm and has taken some wicked shots with her D200, hopefully it'll be a good choice for the D300 too

Re: Hmmmmm

'Cause it's fast I would guess. At f1.8 it will be the fastest lens in your bag, unless you can afford an awful lot of money on any faster lenses.

Now everyone tell me I'm wrong and it's becasue it's so light

Re: Hmmmmm

I can't help but chuckle that the photographic community has come full circle. In my film days the 50mm 1.8 was the standard lens on every 35mm camera. Although most kit lenses these days are of the zoom variety there's still plenty of room in the camera bag for a tiny 50mm 1.8 or 1.4. It's a versatile lens that has great sensitivity to light. i prefer manual focus and the "nifty fifty" is easy & quick. I may need to look into one. Thanks for the post and all the examples.
