Re: Think I've made my mind up about a new camera.

Phil

if its not too late to post I have the D200 and its fantastic. the reason why you see a lot of photos taken with it was because when it first came out it was (and still is) classed as the entry level pro camera.
Like most "Toys" it has a lot of settings you may never ever use but there just incase.
One advantage over the other cameras below that level is the settings arn't mainly menu driven, or in other words you can set the camera up without having to go in the menu to do it.

The D300 is now supposed to be the next upgrade to the D200 but I do query if it is actually worth it. Yes the sensor self clean is a bonus but the extra 2 meg pix and the live view? well i will leave that for others to decide.

There is no way would I part from mine, if i were to get another camera this would still remain as a backup.

Any disadvantages with the D200? yes , it is power hungry and you do need at least one backup battery. In my case there is no way am I spending £50 or there abouts on a battery, I bought a genuine couple from China or looks genuine at least in all appearances (2 for £30 including p/p) the only difference is they don't show how much charge is left which the UK versions do, but i suspect they are made for the Asian market.

Re: Think I've made my mind up about a new camera.

Now have you considered the new D60 just announced? I saw it at the Focus on Imaging show and have to say I was impressed. Without looking at every detail on what has and doesn't have I can't make an accurate judgement, but on the face of it apart from being smaller than the D200 it does have 10 meg pix and sensor self clean with new expeed processor, but quite a bit smaller than the D200.
Now for the big question , how steady is it to hand hold? without actually being able to test it I can't answer with any certainty but I do suspect that it may be a bit on the light side, and I find that a heavier camera and lens can be hand held steadier, without going into VR etc which is another subject.

Re: Think I've made my mind up about a new camera.

What put me off the D40 & D40X was how small they were & if anything the D60 seems even smaller.

I'd certainly go and get a D80 tomorrow but I'm waiting to see what happens price wise with the D200 following the launch of the D300.

Having said that there's loads of new models around the corner so I've decided to bide my time till later in the year.

The price of the D200 is certainly dropping and maybe its the start of the end of production, I don't know. What i do know is that you won't be dissapointed with it.

Re: Think I've made my mind up about a new camera.

It wasn't ebay!

I have a huge 27" monitor which I do love, but the company have promised me a replacement of the new model when it comes out OR a refund (as I had some problems with this one). So I almost ordered a D300 for 999 from currys and if you buy via quidco you get 3% back too! So takes the total to 964!! The money back from the monitor would more than half cover it, plus I could sell my D40.

But.... (isn't there always a but!?) I tried the smaller 20" samsung monitor that is used on the testing PC and I just couldn't live with it

I would have been lost with it anyway!

I also looked at the D300 on the Nikon stand, and I have to say I don't think the price over the D200 is worth it ( personal opinion). Ok it now has exceed and faster continuous shoot mode (but not by much), live view and a larger viewing screen and 2 meg pix extra and self clean sensor.

But for about an extra £300 or there abouts no. I would rather spend that on a lens.

There are some that having the latest is a must have at all costs, but for me I will stay with the D200

Re: Think I've made my mind up about a new camera.

Bazza, I thought that too at first, but I've been hearing that the D300 is a wonderful bit of kit. The concensus seems to be, if you have a d200, not really worth the upgrade _unless_ you want or need the new features. If you don't own a D200 - then skip it and get the D300 _unless_ the cost difference really is an issue.

I'm undecided tho - do I even need such a high end camera? I would prob be more than happy with a D80
