if you read my previous post, its the Male who has red on its head and the Female doesn't it is plain black. We have them visit every day, dawn will confirm, and somewhere I have photos of both parents feeding a chick as well

but, this is a Red Bellied Woodpecker, that is what they call them here
I have an American bird guide I bought, that is what it is called xxx

get back to the UK MS . These USA birds are all called differently Look at what they call the goldfinch against our goldfinch, they are entirly different

I don't think this is a greater spotted, it's not got the black feathers on the side of the head and chest that a greater spotted has.
Did a bit of research and does indeed look like the red bellied wp.

it has made me more interested in birds though, as I have to keep researching what type of bird I am looking at. Bluebirds are my favourite, but have yet to capture a decent picture, as they are quite shy and my zoom can't get close enough.

I absolutely adore American birds, and I think you are so very very lucky to see so many of them! I demand you get a good long lens, and get me some pics of many different species. Go and get me some pics of a Baltimore Oriole and a Grackle... RIGHT NOW!
