Re: The Big Garden Bird watch 2012

No kidding Mossy. I have yet to see it. I'm glad that it was shared without a doubt. The starling doesn't look skinny by any means. It's nice that they learn to adapt.

Working with Wildlife Rehab center I have seen many birth defects but none such as this.
The Garden bird watch is something that is done by the Royal Society for the prevention of cruelty to birds (RSPB for short) each year once a year but surveys can be done all year and results sent to the British trust for Ornithology. You should have something similar in the states : http://www.osnabirds.org/ . There is this site and 6 others listed on their home page. Whether any of them have options for doing things like garden watches allowing you to send in the results, its something you would have to look into .
Beak defects are common, although this is the 1st garden bird with a defect i have come across.
Brian, having looked through other images yesterday, the starling from yesterday is quite lucky, if you could call him that, his beak looked like it at least closed properly, other birds in other images, they were not so lucky, with their beaks overlapping and all out of shape, would make it very hard for them to feed.......

That is a shame Mary. And please call me Mark No need to be so formal

Try this link....

http://www.nmnh.si.edu/BIRDNET/ornith/state.html

There is a link for Michigan but it links you to the Rouge River Bird Observatory. They might know of local organizations that keep track of local bird species.........Has to be one out there somewhere

Re: The Big Garden Bird watch 2012

We don't do the BGBW, not sure we can as we're in Ireland anyway... however we do the Irish Garden Bird Survey every year - which is a much more in depth thing and goes on for longer. We're still doing it, think it started either December or beginning of January... trying to remember! Erm... we also do IWeBS counts - which is Irish Wetland Bird Survey. We were doing Bird Atlas too when it was going - that was great fun!
