That's the key - sometimes it's not always possible to reshoot.

Me too

Funnily enough I had to clone out a hideous curtain from one of my old photos that is similar to the one in this thread the other day - tho wouldn't it be cool if I could go back in time to retake the photograph

Hideous curtains?! Nah leave them in for old times sake!

PP isnt all bad - if done right and in moderation. I mean, Atlas had a shoot with me today and Mr Winky is currently on the outpost - if you get my drift! If iv got the shot, im going to take it! PP means i can say goodbyue to Mr W!

Totally agree with DJ - cloning out something like that setee could be very laborious and I'm not sure that it would be worth it in this instance.
Sometimes a little blur and/or a vignette and maybe even a touch of desaturation can stop your eye wandering a distracting background like that.
The best solution would of course be seeing it before composing your shoot and doing something about it then - but a relaxed unposed shot like that is usually not the same if you say 'hang on a minute, keep smiling, I'm just going to drape a blanket over the sofa behind you!' If it was my kids they'd be gone by the then and I would have missed he moment!

I think Az is right that you could do with a little lift from a levels adjustment layer - very easy to do in Elements 6 (which is what I use).
