If the image pleases you, then that is the most important thing. Pleasing others is secondary and not really point of our hobby.

Professionals on the other hand have to produce images that please or inform others as that is how they earn their living.

Re: 5. what do u think? (border)

When i was in primary school my teacher, who was big on art, used to take me to the local art centre at lunch times. although, like photography, i wasn't brilliant at painting, i was pretty good at describing what i thought a particularly picture was saying to me.
One day i remember her taking me and showing me a picture of several squiggly lines on a black background. “What do you see” she asked, urm, i saw just a couple of lines.”No, look again and tell me what you see”, she said.
In the end i did see a story within the picture and i think photography is the same. Sometimes it’s not up to the photographer to tell you what the picture is mean't to represent, it’s down to you to find what that picture means to you, if you’re only seeing a fence then, like me with the squiggly line, i think you may not be looking at it properly.

In Black and white, for me this pictures does tell a story, black and white gives this picture an eerie, gloomy isolated feeling which i really like.

Re: 5. what do u think? (border)

Yes, i like that much better. Now my eyes are not being drawn to various coloured debris on the ground rather, my eyes are drawn to the right, to the vast natural landscape cut off by a manmade barrier giving it that isolated, sad, abandoned feeling.
Do i now see a country’s border? No, but perhaps i don’t need to because i do see a divide and, for me, the picture does capture the feeling/atmosphere associated with that divide.

Good stuff

Re: 5. what do u think? (border)

Shar,

Just thought I would add my two pen’orth for what it’s worth.

Firstly the rule of thirds and how it applies to this photo. As has already been said, this rule/guide is not cast in stone and is often broken in the quest for composition, however, it does apply to your picture, almost. The converging lines of the image are supposed to lead the eye and where they do meet is close to the thirds intersections/lines, whether a slight change of position would have improved the final result is debatable.

Secondly the picture, technically it’s fine. As a ’news’ record to be viewed by others it needs text, on it’s own it doesn’t, without explanation, convey anything about a border, conflict. refugees etc. it is just a containing fence, although it does say ‘border’ in the title.

I like a photo intended to tell a story to do just that, if circumstances prevent this then text should be added. The picture perhaps doesn’t quite speak the ‘thousand words’ but just a few written words brings everything into perspective.

Love the B&W conversion, adds a great deal to the impact.

At the end of the day (what a strange saying that is), it is what the picture means to you that is important.
