The One That Got Away

Ok, so I've got this new 70-300mm lens and fancy Manfrotto tripod setup. I need to test out the rig at the long end of the lens, 300mm. I've got just the perfect location, Haceta Head Lighthouse near Florence, Oregon. I've been there before three times. I know the tourist pullover off highway 101 gets all the attention but the lighthouse is at the end of a point of land. The 300mm focal length would be ideal to pull that distance in and properly full frame and compose the shot. I've got two bubble levels on the new tripod and Manfrotto Joystick head so leveling the photo with the horizon should be a piece of cake. I set everything up and took about 10 shots with different compositions. I carefully adjusted the circular polarizing filter for that "perfect" sky. Did I mention it was a 375 mile round trip ride by motorcycle. That's two full tanks of gas plus food on the road. See the results of all this hard work below.

Yup, I forgot to take my memory card out of my laptop the last time I downloaded photos. I even had a spare 4gig card in my camera bag but didn't notice the card was missing in the camera because I was utilizing Live View Mode. I didn't discover the goof until I got home and went to fetch the card from the camera. No Card. It was still safely inserted in the card reader in my laptop. Arghhhhh!

Re: The One That Got Away

It might be a while since that trip takes all day and another day to revive the things that hurt from such a journey.

Re: The One That Got Away

LOL sorry Bob, but that was funny reading all your carefull planning of setting up the shots then taking them and believing they are recorded only to find out there is no memory card in your camera, I can't stop laughing. But I know these things are no laughing matter at the time Bob, just like me driving over 3 hours to a wildlife park only to discover it's closed LOL but at the time you feel so annoyed with yourself and feel like crying.

I hope you get back there soon Bob, next time with spare memory cards

Re: The One That Got Away

You know I saw a -E- in the top display window, didn't know what it was, so I ignored it. Had I known it ment no memory card I would have simply loaded my spare card I carry in my camera bag and reshot the photos. I hope you're right about never doing that again. By the wat, I also noticed my battery was running low. I always carry a spare charged batter in my bag. I recharged the one in the camera as soon asI returned home.
