Why do we get ripped off in the UK?
The new Nikon D300s is $1,799.95 in the US, which converts to: £1,087
Yet in the UK the D300s is £1,499 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Both prices are from Amazon - so why do we get ripped off? Argh!

Taxes I guess? We get it worse in Ireland... 21% slapped on for most luxury items. There's also an import tax, but I'm not sure how any of it works - maths was never my strong point.
I can't actually find a price for this in Ireland at the moment - but had a basic look around, and the D300 is still selling for €1600 + :/ Can't find a price for D700 atm either - but the D3 is a staggering 4,299.99

I don't think it's so bad in a lot of parts? Though presumably, they'd be the most expensive parts?

That much is true - again, less so in some states. Mind Canada's not bad - having said that, not at all sure what prices are like there either!

Customs on postage can be awfully dodgy - it's very difficult here with that - and they regularly take it to the post office - opened - and expect you to pay the 21% and then the import tax on top of that too!
This is why when I can I buy my equipment from the UK - it may be expensive, but it's cheaper than the alternative!
Having said that - someone once told me that buying without the relevant tax etc makes the warranty void - I can't see how that could be... ? :/
