Waterfall

Took this a couple of weeks back, I know there are several issues with it so want to know how to get it right next time I'm there.

It was starting to get dark, about 8.30pm, had camera on night portrait & balanced on a post (forgot to take a tripod).

Re: Waterfall

At a quick glance I would suggest that the image might benefit from cloning out the sticks in the foreground. It also seems to be a little bit out of level so perhaps a gentle rotation would also help to improve the overal effect. You could also perhaps try a gentle softening overal to match the surroundings to the time -lapsed effect of the waterfall.

Its still a nice shot though

Re: Waterfall

Lifted the shot and had a play with it, I rotated it 2% CW and cropped to just behind the head of the ornament on the right.

Used levels to balance the image a bit and lightened it.

I opted to sharpen it with unsharp mask (98:3:3) and then used soft light to blend the image a bit more.

Keep at it you will get there. Nothing wrong that can't be improved PP but the shot may have been better taken in more light or a higher exposure.

Re: Waterfall

I think you have done well with this shot The focus seems a little off, you have focussed on the statue (I was going to call it a rock until I looked again and realised it was a person rding a horse ) rather than on the waterfall. Are you looking for the soft water effect? If so then you can drop your ISO further (I normally shoot waterfalls at 100 or 200 ISO) but then you will need to lengthen your shutter time to allow for enough light. It is a little on the dark side, but a common problem with waterfalls is having blown highlights which you have sucessfully avoided here

Next time you go, take a tripod and try and set up a little further to your right. There is a branch of the left tree obscuring some of the shot.

Re: Waterfall

Thanks Greyhawk, I will be going back there in September so I will definately take a tripod and will try 100 or 200 ISO - I was also thinking, that because I'll lengthen the shutter time, that a remote shutter would also be a good idea....???
