'Looking' at the Sunday Papers.

There's been some amazing 'dedicated' photography supplements of late but the one thing I've never really appreciated is the sheer volume of quality photography that's to be seen throughout the Sunday papers.

Take the Sunday Times for example from the weekend. I was sat at the kitchen table with it spread from here to Timbuktu when I noticed a photograph from the Scotland v Ireland six nations rugby match on the cover of the sports section. It was nothing out of the ordinary but never the less, it caught my eye for it's 'photographic' merits rather than a picture simply printed to accompany the match report.

I realise each image will have been carefully selected (from many) for how best it 'represents' the event or perhaps how well it helps the paper get it's own opinion or 'spin' accross but as I turned the pages (careful to skip those covering the Manchester United v Liverpool match) I found myself looking more and more at the fantastic images of Golf, Football, Rugby, Cricket, Horse Racing, Darts and so on.

I often see guys with their orange bibs and big white L lenses ducking for cover by the side of the pitch yet I've never really given much thought to the connection between them and their pictures that either end up covered in my marmalade and crumbs or lining the dog crate.

The photographer's names appear on the top of each shot albeit in tiny writing but it's all you need to go and check out more about them, their work and their kit for example on the web.

Re: 'Looking' at the Sunday Papers.

Agree Phil - an image can make or break a page, that's true for non photographic images too. For example look at our logo - remember what we had before? That horrible blue one

Images are powerful stuff.

It's funny when you look these photographers up and find that they're showing their pics and discussing kit just like us.

it is funny ...as there are people on this site who get pictures in newspapers and magazines regularly

I'd love to hit a colour spread in a Sunday glossy tho.
