lens advice

I have a Nikon D60 which came with the standard lens think its 18-55. I want a new lens for xmas so what should I go for the 55-200.
Any advice much appreciatted

I had a D50 which came with a kit lens (see my blurb below) and ended up buying a longer lens 2nd hand from Dawn which I think was actually Bazza's.

It's a 70-300mm lens (no VR/IS) and despite there being 'newer' versions out - I'm still more than happy with the results (a few below)

I guess the main question is what do you want to photograph ?

Do you have a steady hand? If not the 55-200vr is a good buy
If not there are more to choose from like the one Phil mentioned

It depends on what you want to take photos of, I find the 70-300VR lens handy for long distance shots but useless for closeups, same as a macro lens is not very good for long distance.

Remember the longer the lens mm the more likely camera shake will occur, which is why I suggested the lens above.
It also depends on what price range you want to pay.#

I have £250 and usually just take pictures of the dogs and kids

I have the D40X with the 18-55 & the 55-200 lenses. I'm mainly a landscape photographer these days so I almost never use the 55-200. It's a good lens but just doesn't fit my present shooting needs. If I had another lens it would be the 60mm macro.

I have this lens, does portraits and macro, i have also bought from this company without problems, I think they get their gear from a parent company in the USA as i bought a lens from them but it had a USA warrantee. but shouldn't be a problem should you return it. Its a great lens

Taken under flourescent light with NikonD200 Tamron 90mm macro lens and SB600 flashgun set at -3. Distance 9"" away but could have gone down to 6"". The rest is on the exif file. Oh forgot shot in Jpeg fine. Flower head size 3/4 inch.




This is straight from the camera, absolutely no editing The sharpening in the exif files is done in the camera as are all the other readings.

I'm always taking pics of dogs, some of the pics in my albums were taken with the Nikon 55-200mm vr, I got mine from camerabox.co.uk about 8 months ago for £115! for the money it is superb, very sharp in good light, heres 2 pics taken with it.








I've recently handled the 70-300mm vr which is a little heavier and a littler better build quality, with surposedly better vr and manual focus overide, its just over your budget but to be honest you can't go wrong with the 55-200 vr.
