Re: tripod reccomendation

Choosing the right tri-pod can be a right nightmare!

The general concensus (sp?) is to buy quality now, to save money. The gist is that buying cheap is to waste money. A tripod is to steady a camera, and that's hard to do on the cheap. In the field, you'd be amazed at how unstable a heavy camera on a tripod can be in wind. Saying that id buy cheap and see how you get on with it and wether or not you'll get the use out of it.

Many photographers will have 2 or more tripods as differebt situations call for different equipment. Studio portraits and quick general use, a light weight generic model with the standard three point telescoping legs and tri-directional head adjustment (aka extenable legs and adjustable mount). Landscape photography will require something more sturdy, heavey and more than likey a center weight. Macro will require something smaller such as a 6"inch tripod.

Try to get a tripod with a centre brace, because it'll (a) be more stable, and (b) you can have the at any angle, instead of having to pull them right out, which can be very useful when there's not a lot of room. For photography work, aim for a 3-axis head so that you can take portrait images as well as landscapes. Even for 'landscapes', portrait can still be the right format. If you can, get a quick-release head; it'll help a lot when you're switching back and forth between tripod and handheld shooting. Try to get a tripod with exchangeable heads; it'll mean that (a) if you break the head (does happen, or maybe that's just me), you won't have to replace the whole tripod, and (b) you can get a pan and tilt head later if you do any video work.

Re: tripod reccomendation

Manfrotto are the Lamborghini's in the tripod world used them at college they were great, go into a camera shop and have a play about with them, asked to be shown them and compare the models first hand, try out how easy they are to use and which one suits you, then try online see if you can get the model you want any cheaper some shops like jessops will price match certain sites.

Re: tripod reccomendation

I had a Uni-loc 2300 tripod (which I sold a few years ago - stupid me) as they are £200 before you even add on the head.

I'd look for one of these 2nd hand

Re: tripod reccomendation

It really depends on how much you want to spend (though I know you said you are looking for a budget tripod). IMO Gitzo are the best however they are out of most people's price range (including mine ). I personally like Manfrotto, they produce good quality equipment and the price isn't too bad (you are still looking at £200+ for a decent set (legs and head) though).
