Photographic critiques of our pictures

I've only been a member for a day - and have really enjoyed looking around at everyones contributions so far. I think you all have some great skills in the way you present your photographic works. As members when we show our works, we are all proud of what we've achieved. This site is bound to grow in time, and more members will join in the banter, contributing more and more pictures.

I have a question though - or maybe it's a thought.

When we all post pictures - we all get some great encouraging responses like 'Nice pics' etc. And of course these comments are pretty much true - they are 'Nice pics'.

The question is - do we want to continue along the road of 'Nice Pics' or do we want to discuss a little more detail, and maybe provide some constructive feedback?

I think there are many advantages of constructive feedback, however I'm also aware that some people could take comments that critically appraise their works in a negative manner.

Do you think that in terms of becoming better photographers we should be open with each other as to how we may improve our works?

How do we distinguish from those members that post for enjoyment, and don't want feedback on potential improvements? Or do you think everyone would join in? Would it stop people posting? Or make them post more to gain feedback?

Discussions could ensue as to why the suggested improvement was not possible, or how next time it's something we'll think about to improve our phototgraphy.

This isn't a school, a class or anything else like that - but I think we can all learn a thing or two if we contribute to each others works and listen feedback - even if we don't agree with it. Sometimes it's easy to say a photograph would be better if this was here or if that was there... But it would be good if we were all made to think about our works a little more, and in time we'd all go from 'Nice pics' to 'Wonderfully stunning super amazing great NICE pics'.

What are your viewpoints on the above?

Re: Photographic critiques of our pictures

Totally agree with you clairelou - Nobody wants to hear their pictures are 'crap' - and from what I've seen here - nobodys pictures are!! I'm thinking more as to how we can improve our skills by sharing tips and knowledge, and thinking about the pictures we've taken - to move them from 'Nice Pics' (which they certainly are!!) to 'Super Nice Pics'.

I'm not suggesting that when someone posts a picture we say something like:

'Why did you take that pic - it's rubbish, look at the camera shake, and that big white blob in the background'.

More like:

'I think it's a good subject, and you've thought about it before pressing the shutter, however it could be improved by a slightly faster shutter speed, maybe by increasing the ISO, to sharpen the image. If you'd stepped a little to the right, you potentially could have improved the composition, by excluding that white area just behind the rabbits head, do you think that would have been possible when you took the picture?'

A comment like that could open a discussion. Maybe someone wouldn't know what ISO is, or why shutter speed may have an effect on sharpness. It may develop (I should stop using that word on this site!!) into a resource for people to learn as they read the comments about our pictures.

As I say - just wondering what you all think? Let's have a few more views

Re: Photographic critiques of our pictures

Have a look at this thread: http://www.yophotographer.com/page.php?t=113

We're going to have icons that will display in our posts if we are looking for C&C

Basically those of us who welcome c&c will be able to select an option in our profile which will then display a 'C&C Welcome' icon with every post we pic.

There are also some other suggestions we are going to implement where icons are shown for things like, it being ok for people to edit our pics and repost them on the site

But yeah, I agree that C&C is a great way to learn, and many of us have been offering this when we feel it apt and of course with tact

Re: Photographic critiques of our pictures

I agree with both Azz and cymruchris but I am always aware that a lot of folks here are newbies and it could be quite upsetting to be told anything other than ' ooh nice piccy' I would hate to be the one to put someone off because they weren't ready for a critique

I completely agree with everything you say which is why I like people to post the EXIF data if they can, this can help a lot. However I am holding off critiquing photo's until we get the C&C icon. A few people have written 'C&C welcome' at the top of their threads when posting photo's but if they don't then I am loathed to comment on how they possibly could have improved it - it might actually put someone off

Azz - just for clarification, does that mean all the pictures that we post will have to be either C&C or not? Not that i'm bothered either way

Re: Photographic critiques of our pictures

I ask for CCs on alot of my images. I like the idea but others may not welcome it. Either an otion in your profile or a seperate critique section is needed

Re: Photographic critiques of our pictures

I think critique is good if offered in the right way so an icon indicating that you're open to critique is good -but also alot of newbies ( by which I mean me ) are totally baffled by alot of 'photo speak' and need things to be pointed out in simple terms so bear in mind the experience of the photographer when offering up suggestions
