Auto v Manual

ok now heres a topic.

after moonstone's MANUAL photos i thought i would ask the question.

auto or manual which is best.?

i can honestly say without checking the exif data i thought ms was already taking pics in manual so can i say it is better?

i dont know.

looking at other peoples pics can YOU tell if its taken in auto or manual by just looking at it for 30 seconds?

Re: Auto v Manual

I don't really think one method is better than the other - It's the resulting picture that counts.

Sometimes 'auto' will select what you would have chosen to select 'manually'.

Manual certainly gives you more scope for taking pictures that the camera would never select on its own.

With my Nikon D50 I'd always shoot in Aperture priority mode (for constantly selecting different depth of field) or shutter priority mode (if I'm constantly adjusting shutter speed)

With my Canon 40D - I'll shoot in manual as it has two scroll wheels so it's dead easy to select aperture with one and shutter speed with the other.

As for telling the difference - My ones that go titz up certainly stand out from the auto ones

Re: Auto v Manual

Hi Jols

Here are my thoughts......

At the moment the pics I take in Auto are better than anything I can do in Manual

I want to learn to use my Oly in Manual, but I am way out of my comfort zone at the moment, finding it all a bit scary TBH.

If I took say fifty pics in Auto at the moment , lets say at least half or more are fine, but with Manual we are talking about five

If a moment really needed to be captured or the perfect pic opportunity presented itself, well , I will honestly say I would shoot in Auto at the moment, then try Manual.

I personally think using whatever method gets you the right shot is fine. I just want to learn how to use the camera properly, but yes, I will still shoot in the Auto mode, but also Manual.
I think it will be very obvious for awhile which I have shot in Manual

Re: Auto v Manual

Manual does waht it says on the tin, gives _you_ control. Whereas auto tries to do it for you, least to best of its abilities.

Like Phil, I find it much easier to use manual mode with the D300, in fact I love the ergos on the d300, it's so easy to change settings.
