Re: Discrepancies in Raw files?

There's undoubtedly more flexibility when you shoot in RAW - but how many of us (apart from KK!) actually manipulate our photos to that extent?

I have never once needed or used the extra controls offered to me by shooting in RAW, and I probably wouldn't want to - because it means spending more time with each photo, and when you've been out and want to post 20 or so from the day, I just don't have the time to tweak each one individually.

If I was a pro and every shot I took was that important then yeah I'd shoot RAW, because chances are each photo would warrant that extra time spent (as I'd probably be getting paid for it). But for posting on the web, I've found that jpeg usually gives you the same great results as if you'd have manually tweaked the photos yourselves, and quicker! (least with the Nikons - as they are actually renowned for the end result in their jpegs).

If I used captureNX exclusively I would shoot in Raw as it reads the shooting data from Nikons own cameras - but photoshop does not, and only offers you the flat base data to work with, which creates all that extra work.

Re: Discrepancies in Raw files?

I'm sure a lot of pro's shoot RAW, and I'm sure just as many shoot jpeg.

As for working on a RAW file, I could be wrong but I thought that the RAW was not actually used, and programs sell themselves on the fact that they don't edit the RAW file and save a PS specific file that has the alterations done to the RAW, have a look in your directory and you'll find the extra file that PS has created with the RAW edit.

http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/raw.htm is a good read in relation to the use of RAW or jpeg, yes it has a jpeg bias and gives the reasons for the bias.

Re: Discrepancies in Raw files?

I always shoot RAW ..I used to always shoot jpegs but you can do SO much more with a RAW pic before saving it as a jpeg

Anyway, what does it matter? At the end of the day *I* don't care if you shoot in RAW or not ...the choice is yours

Nothing to do with *snobbery* IMHO (here OR elsewhere) ..it is knowing what you can DO with a RAW pic as opposed to not knowing ..or caring .. Some folks don't want the extra info that comes with a RAW pic ...and that is fine....but I do

Re: Discrepancies in Raw files?

Undoubtedly your right Melody, all down to personal choice

Think we all went off topic from Azz's post, spoke to a mate who is a pro tog and a cannon user and he has the same issues as Azz with RAW and converts his RAW's with cannon software prior to any processing in PS.

Re: Discrepancies in Raw files?

The original question was "Do you use RAW, and if so, why?"

I think we began the thread by answering the question properly, but SK is right...we went slightly off topic.

Azz is right too....if you are a pro, then it really matters that your shot can be fixed EVERY time there is a problem, in order to sell the image, or be paid for your day's work.
Some companies actually request the RAW files too, for their own post production processes.
The flip side of that coin is, hopefully one day, after much practice may I add....that many of us on here would lilke the chance to sell our photographs at one level or another, hence becoming professional to an extent.

Would it then be more acceptable to shoot your images in RAW? If so, why not just start now?

It's been pointed out by others who have tried both RAW & JPG options, that they couldn't really see much difference between the two. If so, then what does it really matter which format you shoot in? Other than file size of course.

And like I said earlier, "I" personally find it much better to shoot in RAW, and if need be, use the SONY software that came with the camera....not Photoshop.
I'll only use Photoshop for cropping and re-sizing my images.

Re: Discrepancies in Raw files?

I prefer to take photographs with clothes on not in the RAW, it could be embarrassing .

This thread could go on forever, if we linked to each and every photographer who shoots in RAW or JPEG

Mel's spot on. It's personal choice.
