Re: Hama Star 42 or Hama Star 75 Tripod?

Azz

That is one of the reasons I bought a manfrotto 055XPROB with a manfrotto pistol grip head, the weight definately makes all the difference to camera stability. I gave Dawn my other Kodak tripod, that was good, and light as well , but the difference between the two is remarkable.

For macro work you do really need something very stable to stop camera movement or even shutter slap.

I do have a very light weight velbon tripod as well just incase , but i shall use that now mainly for the flashgun.

You do need to check what max weight the tripod can take as well .

Re: Hama Star 42 or Hama Star 75 Tripod?

Some good advice there Azz so cant really add much. I would take on board what Stan and Bazza have said about weight and reasons for using it. I know you do alot of landscapes so you will need summit very sturdy - the mafrottos are definatley worth looking at

Re: Hama Star 42 or Hama Star 75 Tripod?

just had a look at those 2 on tescos ,I wouldn't even give them a second glance. Correction, may be ok for point and shoot compacts but thats about all. They just wouldn't be able to support and weight. Remember a tripod and head has to support the camera and lens in every position, and those def wouldn't. put a heavy lens on and it would only point to the ground.

Notice they don't give a max weight load, so that should tell you something.

At that price they will bound to be rubbish, I would suggest you go into a decent camera store and and have a look at a range of tripods.

Re: Hama Star 42 or Hama Star 75 Tripod?

I use a Mafrotto as well, a 190XB. I have done 30 sec exposures in quite windy conditions and not a hint of any camera movement.

As for carrying the weight, you have to suffer for your art Think of it this way, you are getting a workout at the same time!!

Re: Hama Star 42 or Hama Star 75 Tripod?

Thanks all - was gonna say I'd try the heaviest Hama one, but if you reckon they're crap I might just steer clear. Perhaps if I have the camera on me next time they will let me try it - or actually, I could just buy it and take it back if it's rubbish as they usually give you a refund if you say it's not compatible

Re: Hama Star 42 or Hama Star 75 Tripod?

Manfrotto 190XPROB to 055XPROB =£88 TO £140 or there abouts

Manfrotto 322RC2 head (pistol grip type ) = £90 or there abouts you can get cheaper head types

camera attachment plate = £10.

remember that although initially it is a load of cash that will last you a lifetime. Those are just rough price guides from one company.

Azz that is the type of thing even if it means saving for a time. Def do not go for one with a long handle grip on the head, it gets in the way of looking thru the view finder.

Re: Hama Star 42 or Hama Star 75 Tripod?

Bazza is spot on, get a quality tripod and it will last you through several camera's. The hama one, may last only through several exposures!!

I bought a hama lens cap when i lost one of mine, that was only 1/4 the price of their tripods! Kinda gives an indication on the quality. The lens cap was pants by the way, thankfully i found my proper nikon one

Re: Hama Star 42 or Hama Star 75 Tripod?

Azz your camera and lens weighs just under 2.5lbs ( D40 and 18-55mm lens). if you get or have flash gun it will be around 2.5lbs , sorry I still think in real proper weight measurements.

This is the absolute minimum weight a tripod you will need for support and that would still be doubtful, to be safe get one that supports far more, at least 7lb upwards I would be looking for.

Re: Hama Star 42 or Hama Star 75 Tripod?

Azz,

My tripod has a hook on it, that could let you hang a camera bag with something in for a bit of stability weight... but if there's not much in price, then i'd go for the heavier one.

Re: Hama Star 42 or Hama Star 75 Tripod?

combined weight of D200 , 70-300mm vr Nikon lens with a SB600 flash with batts fitted is nearly 6lb, just to give you some idea.

Sturobinson

I don't doubt for one minute that you are happy with your tripod, however Azz has to consider not only that he might add/change his camera equipment, but also looking for stability at low level say for macro shots, also a quick release facility.

I am not familiar with your tripod so I can't comment, but I suspect you would have difficulty working at ground level with it when windy, and have to unscew the camera from the tripod as well.

Therefore one can only give advice to cover every possible situation he might need to use a tripod in, be it in the normal position- low level- quick release etc.
