Canon 60mm or 100mm macro lens?

Been looking at both the 60mm f2.8 lens 100mm f2.8 (non IS). Now I will be mainly taking pictures of inverts and reptiles, mainly my tarantulas, snakes and lizard. I like both lenses for different reasons. I understand I get more room with the 100mm lens which would be better taking pictures of wild insects but I dont need that with my pets and I think it would actually make it harder for me, but with the 60mm would I have trouble taking close up photos with the in built flash? How much of a problem would it be? I am looking at 2nd hand lenses so would it be worth me getting the 60mm and a flash (which I have wanted for a while) or go for the 100mm. If I do go for the 60mm I can always upgrade at a later date and if you think the 60mm is the better option what is a good but affordable flash?

Thanks

Can't advise about the mm choice but if that close I would forget about the flash, first of all that close the pets wouldn't like it and second it would be too bright. Far better to use a longer exposure. If you had a remote flash then you would be able to direct the angle of flash so it didn't worry your pets.

I agree with Bazza about the flash Katie.

I think I would agree with you, go with the 60mm for now, and if you don't like it you can sell it and upgrade later. I reckon you might like it tho

Re: Canon 60mm or 100mm macro lens?

Both decent lenses and both will get you 1:1 magnification.

The 60mm is EF-S whilst the 100mm is EF. Only an issue if you move to full frame or want to shoot film as EF-S lenses won't work.

You'll be working from shorter distances with the 60mm which can result in blocking light to your subject. A ringflash is a good flash option - without getting into 'photo stacking' flash obviously gives the option of smaller apertures and incresased depth of focus.

The 100mm lens gives you the option to back off a bit which can be handy when shooting timid subjects.

The Sigma 105 f/2.8 EX DG OS is a very popular lens too.
