Re: Another go at some black and white

I like no.1 but inly problem I have is focus is not sharp on eyes and shadow on right side of face.

No.2 though some people may say its blown out in places I like it.

No.3 not sure about and no.4 quite like but the sky don't seem right and its either been run through hdr treatment or you have a very dirty sensor, just my opinion mate..

Re: Another go at some black and white

Really like numbers 2 and 3. Agree with Owen on number one, and it bothers me because there's something not quite right - having said that it has an eerie quality that I like

Number 4 is all wrong... not the photo, but the processing of it - the sky looks damaged - like the shot has been run through some software which has messed it up.

Re: Another go at some black and white

Number 1 - I like the tones and contrast but it does look a bit soft on here.

Number 2 - Cracking capture and pose although I'm not keen on the over exposure.

Number 3 - I like this one. You've positioned yourself / timed it well to get that fantastic composition and the stark black of the figure really works against the haze.

Number 4 - As others have already said, there's something funny going on with those artefacts in the sky but the image itself is good. The simple composition works really well and the shutter speed is about spot on.

Re: Another go at some black and white

I don't think the white vignette with the 1st & 2nd works especially the 1st as she has blond hair. An attractive woman though. Hopefully you should get more images of her as she looks a good subject.

The last two are my favs. I am in two minds of the 3rd, whether i would personally clone the ship out.

Nice set though.

Re: Another go at some black and white

Thanks all.

1 is my wife's hairdresser. She doesn't mind me posting. I done a few shots for her and she liked that one. I liked the eerie feel to it too. It was taken with a 60mm macro lens as I read it's good for portraits. So they were my first attempts with it.
Here's another one I done of her....

2 was just b&w treatment that I liked. Looks like I have gone a tad over.

3 This is my fav. I waiting until she was in line with that ship before taking the shot. I thought I could clone the ship out if it didn't look right. I did try to clone it out but whatever tool I used it was obvious I had removed something.
Even if I could have taken it out perfectly I still think I would leave it in like I have. Because it make it easier to see it's the sea and you can place the horizon.

4 ahhhhh no4. I thought I had set up position well and was looking forward to seeing this one on the lappy. Problem was, I used a cheap £10 nd8 filter bought from ebay ...... HUGE mistake, either it's rubbish, or I am... quiet now That shot was 1/3 second. The cheap filter made it look rubbish. I put it through b&w to try and save the picture.
Lesson learnt. Bought a Hoya 58mm PRO-1 DIGITAL ND8 yesterday that should be with me soon.
Here's the original. ...

It was on portrait mode. 1/80sec f2.8. Would I get better results on manual with that lens do you think?

Re: Another go at some black and white

Lovely series of shots Dave,

I like all your portrait shots, but number 1 looks a little soft.

The squirrel shot looks a little on the hot side.

I prefer the later colour beach side shot to the B/W one.
