Portrait tips

Next week my camera club is holding a portrait night, must add we are a bunch of easy going amateurs, and we dont usually have any formal topics, so this is by way of an experiment.

Only rules is turn up with your kit, and expect to take turns as the subject matter I think there will be a basic light set up.

As this is well outside my experience, any tips from anyone would be appreciated, if only they had feathers and sat on a twig.

Fun i hope so Cakey, as long as im not the model, cant abide mu photo being taken.

Same as Laura, I did this some years ago at a local club, then later I used to do a lot of school prom photo shoots.

The club may well have some form of lights already setup, so all I can add is not to forget to have a go at directing your subjects to get the best from them.

I got a picture in my head of me trying to direct the unruly mob of club members Ken im thinking Keystone cops with cameras.

Not a field I am of any level at, but again had a play at a cam club night. One tip I picked up was to rarely shoot straight on. Always have the subject turn their head, so the head faces you and the body doesn't. If that makes sense, use objects like chairs and the like.
