My next camera should be........

I can't go out and buy one tomorrow. The help I need is, what sort of price am I looking at to step up to an all rounder enthusiast camera.

If I can get a price range of a good camera in my head I'll have a target to go for.
Remember I am using a bridge camera just now so it would be my first "proper" camera.

Re: My next camera should be........

I can only offer some general advise, but I would say go for one of the starter kits from the likes of Canon or Nikon as they have a greater following and as such there is a great amount of dedicated accessories/lenses available for them.

If you go for a starter kit (body & lens) you can then start to expand your lens collection as your needs grow, but remember you start to become locked into that system (Nikon/Canon) once you start buying additional glass. Next go out to the shops and try them out see how they handle and if the control layout suites you.

This web site is great for looking at "who cheapest": HERE
Kit 1
1DSmkIII & 1DmkIV
Canon EF70-200L f/2.8 IS
Canon EF100L macro f/2.8 IS
Canon EF85L f/1.2 mkII
Canon EF24-105L f/4 IS
Canon EF300L f/2.8 IS
Canon EF17-40L f/4

Re: My next camera should be........

Thanks for the help Ken. When I was googling (sounds painful lol) I was trying to see the sort of price. I don't really know but I was thinking maybe £4-600.

I'll probably will go for one of the main two. I have a lot of research to but a starter kit like you say, or a bundle should get me going. Not saying I want this one at all, but I guess it would be a deal along this line.... http://www.jessops.com/Directory/cat...=Nikon%20D3100

Re: My next camera should be........

Save some money and consider a secondhand outfit. Many secondhand products are pristine and places like MPB Photographic give very honest descriptions and offer very competitive prices with a short warranty. Aim for a good starter camera such as Canon 450D or a Nikon D90. You may start off with a kit lens, or for either of those bodies get something like a Tamron 17-50 or Sigma 18-50 with a fixed f2.8 aperture. You will immediatly be springboarded to a new level in image quality, but also in clarity of viewfinder for composition and speed of response.

You will perhaps feel a bit peeved you lose a little on zoom length but being able to isolate subjects with wide apertures and work in lower light will soon outweigh this. Then you can get maybe something like a 55-200mm zoom later, or maybe even the whole lot at £600-3700 secondhand.

There is no perfect system. Best go to the shop and decide whether you like the feel of Canons, Nikons or whatever. Whatever anyone says, both will produce very similar results at this price point. There was a similar thread about this a few weeks ago.

Nikon 70-300mm VR
Sigma 18-50mm f2.8 (DX)
Nikon 28-105mm (great walkaround on D700!)

Nikon 20-35mm f2.8
Nikon SB800
Kit 2
Nikon D300
Nikon 20mm f2.8
Nikon 24mm f2.8

I would consider second hand too - mine was like new when I sold it so there are definitely some good uns out there.

Also, set yourself a budge and stick to it - or it will just keep creeping up

Re: My next camera should be........

My advice is have a figure you want to spend, then go and handle all the cameras in your budget, don't discount brands like Olympus, Pentax, Sony etc either. Choose the one that feels right in your hand, and intuitive to you

Good advice Moon. Something I will not rush into is spending the amount on the first shiny new one I see. The trouble is with so much choice out there I know it will start to do my head in. So I'll narrow it down to 2 or 3 after going in the shops and playing..... then hassle you lot
