Re: Post A Pic: The Moon

Okay...... No1 no laughing!
No2 please bear in mind there was all this build up to the Super Moon, and I tramped across snake infested fields in wellies, and I had a tripod!!!and I waited, and..... the clouds rolled in and I got nothing. So tramped all the way home, a bit cheesed off TBH, as I have only a 200mm zoom, so Moon pics aren't really within my capabilities, so this was my big chance to get a decent Moon shot, and it was a failure.

So, several hours later, the moon got a lot higher, still huge, but cloudy, and I was looking outside at it, the clouds broke, and I ran and grabbed my camera, so had to handhold it, and managed this, and then clouds rolled back in.

Even worse the next day, loads of images on the net, and papers of awesome pictures:lol

Behold, my Super Moon

Which was a heavy crop of this yellow blob , this is not the first time I have tried and failed with Moon pics

Re: Post A Pic: The Moon

I waited and nobody flipping went before me after all that.

Hats off to you Moonie for tramping across snake infested fields in the first place. Can't see your exif but yes a tripod is a BIG help so that was right. I start with spot meter on the little (it's small) moon with max aperture for max shutter speed in the hope that it stays sharp and still. If the resulting shutter speed keeps it still in the sky (it moves fast) then I think about moving the max aperture down to a sharper aperture and do so till the shutter speed (combined with ISO) eventually gives up and introduces blurry movement.

Doing it (like you had to in the end) hand held is tricky as you're probably having to deal with shake in which case I'd just up the ISO, stick it on max aperture and go with the fastest shutter speed.

Those with more know how could probably give you far better tips though.

Re: Post A Pic: The Moon

At the time when I took this it was hand held, which is amazing considering it is 1/160 sec shutter speed @ 900mm (stacked extenders). Just goes to show how good "IS" is.

Manual exposure, f9, 1/160th, iso400.

Sorry for the picture re-post:

I can't laugh at your picture because it's more steady than I could ever do hand-held. If I did attempt it and manage to get the moon in frame, it would end up looking like a shooting star
