Two More pieces of kit arrived

Two more pieces of camera gear for my new Nikon D7000 arrived this week, a Nikon MB-D11 Battery grip and the metal screw-on lens caps for the two lenses I own. I also wandered into Camera World in downtown Portland to choose a new camera bag, a Tamrac Expedition 5x 5585. The bag is a backpack variety with a bunch of adjustable compartments for my camera with a Nikkor 18-200mm F/3.5-5.6 VRII lens attached and a lot of other kit. It also has a compartment for a netbook computer as well as a system designed to carry a tripod. With everything I have loaded in this bag I'm going to get quite a workout as it weighs a bunch. I need to get all the straps sorted out to make it more comfortable. I'm planning a 3,000 mile bus trip across the entire United States this August so it will be packed for that journey.

The second piece of gear to arrive was the battery grip. This carries a spare battery just like the one in my main camera body. It also has a duplicate set of controls and a second shutter button when the camera is held in portrait orientation. It's programmed to use the power from the grip first before switching over to the main body battery. I love the overall feel of the camera with the new grip attached although it adds more weight & bulk to the setup. The new camera bag allows me to leave the battery grip and zoom lens on as I place it in the bag. The metal screw-on lens cap adds additional security & protection.

I'll try and take pictures of all this kit and post the photos. Just call me "Jungle Bob" once I get it sorted out and on my back for a test run marathon.......... NOT!

Re: Two More pieces of kit arrived

That bag looks a handy piece of kit, Bob. I always have difficulty transporting the tripod when I go out and about.

I think I might be interested with a battery grip for my Nikon. Just how much weight does it add the the camera?

Nice one Bob

I have the Tamrac Expedition 5x - it's good without being huge so it's what I tend to use if I'm out in the hills needing my hands free rather than my shoulder bag.
Kit 1
Canon 1D Mark 3
Canon EF 17-40mm f/4 L USM
Canon EF 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM
Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 L IS USM

Kit 2

It adds 1.5 pounds Fogey. I just looked up the grip for your D60 and it is considerably cheaper than the one I just bought for the D7000. I paid $250 for the grip and another $56 for the battery that it requires. I saw the grip for your D60 plus two batteries for $89. That's a bunch cheaper.

I like the bag Phil but fully loaded it's quite a lot of weight, especially with a netbook computer & tripod aboard. I know I won't be able to carry my big Manfrotto tripod. Maybe I could hire a Sherpa guide on my expeditions?

I never attach my big tripod to it Bob in fact if I'm using that bag I tend to be scrambling up something with just one body, one or two lenses max plus some sandwiches, wet weather gear or a map etc.

Big tripod only tends to be used closer to the car and then carried on it's own in a bag.

That makes sense Phil. I think I mentioned that I'm planning a 3,000 mile bus trip in August so I want to pack as much stuff in this bag as I can. I'll either have my GorillaPod or my monopod strapped to the pack. I think the whole rig can fit under my seat on the bus for quick access while traveling. There are 4 transfers on the long journey as well as dozens of rest & food stops. I've got thousands of dollare worth of brand new equipment to protect so I'll keep it very close to me.
