Photoshop help please

Hi all,

I have been given a lovely old photograph (dated 1954) of a friends wife. The picture is wallet sized and in good condition, but had a crease diagonally across it.
He asked me if I could have a play with it and see if I could remove the crease. I have reluctantly agreed but I am not sure where to start. I would be fine if the picture was digital but Im not sure if I can do with a scanned photograph? I may be wrong, perhaps if I uploaded it someone could tell me if it is possible?
I am using the photoshop CS3 programme.

Thank you, in advance!

Re: Photoshop help please

Generally speaking the clone tool, carefully applied, can fix almost any defect. It's time consuming but if done carefully you'll never know it was done.

Re: Photoshop help please

Well, I have had a go, and I must say my photoshop skills need some work

It is much harder to get skin tone and lighting right than I first thought!

This is the original

Would anyone else like to have crack, and let me know what you did with it?

Re: Photoshop help please

Just a start for someone else to continue with.

It was a combination of a couple of editing suites. Microsoft Digital Editing 9 and 2006 versions together with Photoshop Elements7 and Silver FX Pro

Vikki

After a time I shall remove this edit so if you want to save it to your pictures don't leave it too long.

Re: Photoshop help please

Both attempts are fantastic!!

Was it mostly the clone tool you used? If so, I really need some more practice

Re: Photoshop help please

Vikki

I find that the Microsoft Editing suites are the easiest to use, especially for a beginner. Unfortunately they only work on Windows XP. They do come including demos.

Version 9 includes auto stitching which version 6 has manual only stitching but 6 has more control over sharpness.
Photoshop Elements does RAW the others only do Jpeg

I only used the clone tool to remove the crease in the photo and the damaged edges. I increased the contrast, did a levels adjustment to add pop & removed some of the noise. Finally I carefully sharpened the photo slightly. You've got to be careful with contrast & shapness because of the pebble grain paper used on the original. After repairing the outer edge I cropped and added a very light vignette and black border to draw attention to the center of the photo.
