Which Camera

Hi folks, I think I have decided on my new camera, and would like your opinions please.

I Like the Cannon EOS400D, and know many of you use this camera.

But what do you think about the Nikon D40X???

Re: Which Camera

If you'd said EOS400D or Nikon D40 I'd have said the Canon but I'd take the D40X over the Canon. I know it's a bit more price wise but I'd possibly see what you could get the D80 for.
Kit 1
Canon 1D Mark 3
Canon EF 17-40mm f/4 L USM
Canon EF 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM
Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 L IS USM
Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II
Kit 2
1D2 & 40D

Re: Which Camera

The D40x is a good entry level cam - but will not see you through for long, if you want to further yourself. You may struggle with the lenses you are limited to - mostly Nikkor (more expensive) and a few Sigma. However if you plan on using it as a "hobby" cam, get it. As Phil says, if you can affor the extra, go for the D80, this is an excellent camera that will see you through for a many years quite happily and will more than keep up with you, as you progress.

In terms of specification between the Canon and the Nikon, the difference is, well, erm, not much! Apart from the sensor, which by all accounts is better than the Nikons (ie less noise at higher ISO settings)

Choosing between these two will mostly depend on how long you want to own it before you upgrade, what type of lens you want tobuy (if any) after purchasing the body, and how far you want to progress.

Reluctantly, as a Nikon owner of the beloved D50, if you cant afford the extra for the D80, get the Canon. It will progress and cater for more needs than the D40x will.

However before you make your choice, the final factor will always be how the cam feels. If your not comfortable with the camera in your hands and how it functions, it wont matter how many bells and whistles it has, you will inevitabley come to loath it! So go out and try them both and see which one suits you.

Good luck

Re: Which Camera

Great thanks so much for that....the D80 is a little more than I wanted to spend....but if it means I don't have to upgrade in the future then something to think over.

Is the D80 any bigger than the other 2 or around the same size, my riend has the Cannon, so I know a little about that, but I think I will go into town on Monday, and have a look.

Re: Which Camera

The D80 is a beutiful camera and is well balanced. However it is a little heavier than the D40x and somewhat larger.

But like i said earlier, if your "just" hobbiest, than the both the d40x or the Canon will suit

Re: Which Camera

It depends how much you want to spend really...

When I was looking for a camera I didn't want to spend too much, however at the same time I wanted to be able to take very nice 'crisp'/sharp picutures from the outset (in other words I wanted a good lens).

I like the Canon 400D - but the kit lens it comes with just isn't good enough in my opinion. So to get the 'quality' I wanted I would have needed to get the 400d and a decent lens, which would have cost another £200 ish - so total would be £600

My other option was D40 or D40x - between the two I choose D40 even tho it had less pixels (extra MP didn't bother be, and for the price you get closer to a d80 which is much better). The D40 comes with an excellent lens so it was able to give me the quality I wanted straight out of the box - without having to spend more on a new lens. So this worked out less the half the price of the Canon 400D package.

I agree with K, if you want one that you don't want to change for a while the D80 is the best out of the three without doubt. You can get it for £489 body or with AF-S DX 18-70mm lens for £625 or with AF-S DX 18-135mm for £616 http://www.camerapricebuster.co.uk/cat4.html Btw that last price is amazing!!!

Good luck! Let us know how you get on!

Re: Which Camera

Thanks again for all you imput, it is making my choice a lot easyer.

So in fact, if I was to go for the Canon 400D , I am going to have to buy another lense any way

So may just go and have a look at the D80 , and see if I like the feel of it,

Those prices look good Azz,

Almost there

Please bear in mind that Azz says this a LOT In my very humble opinion, the kit lens 18-55 is a very useful lens, capable of some good wide angle shots as well as being able to get quite lose to some things but not a true a macro

Re: Which Camera

Lol I do don't I Mel

You don't have to take my word for it tho Jackbox, just check out example photos from all lenses at pbase.com and see which ones you prefer yourself

Canon EF-S 18-55mm

Nikkor 18-70mm

Nikkor 18-135mm

One thing to bear in mind when you come across reviews off the Canon 400D on the web, is that almost always they use different lens for the sample photos. Whereas when you see reviews of say the Nikon D40, they almost always use the kit lens

Don't get me wrong, the 400D is a great camera, but I don't think the kit lens is that good (based on pics I have seen all over the web - you might think different?) and personally, If I had gone with it I would have had to buy better lens to get the standard of pictures I wanted - which of course would have then taken me into Nikon D80 and other similarly priced cameras territory (which offer even more bang for your buck).

Is this your first DSLR? Do you really need the features of the D80 or the 400D? Are you going to get more than one lens in the next 2 years? If not why not consider the D40? It will be more than enough to get into DSLRs and in about 2 to 3 years time when you are ready to upgrade there will be loads of nice new cameras to choose from - all with the latest technology! You could also put the money saved into an extra lens, or towards the next camera you might want to get in 2 to 3 years time

There is no right or wrong answer - just the right decision that suits you We'll all have different opinions when it comes to which DSLR to get
Kit 1
Nikon D300
Nikon 55-200mm VR
Kit 2
Nikon D40
Nikon 18-55mm
