Nikkor 70-300mm Lens Test

My new cheap Nikkor lens just arrived. I took it out in my back yard to photograph a goose and set the lens for 300mm. The review on the lens states soft focus at that longest focal length so I set the camera to F/11 at 1/250" at ISO 400. I mounted my camera on a monopod and did my best to hold the rig steady and fired of this shot. I can actually say I'm pleased and certainly learned how difficult it is to hold that lens steady without Vibration Reduction. I'll be sure to use a tripod in the future so valuable lessons were learned. I did not crop this image and must admit the lighting conditions were horrid. With all that said, what do you think?

I deliberately made the conditions the worst possible, low light detail, higher ISO, slow shutter speed for a 300mm lens & unstable monopod support. It's all a learning experience so now I know I need to crank my ISO to 1600 to gain faster shutter speed as well as only use this lens with solid support like a tripod or bean bag. I don't own a bean bag. LOL Thanks for viewing and thanks for your comments.

Want a little cheat? you will read everywhere that you can't fit a Tele converter on it. Well that is not exactly the truth because you can and I often do it with the same lens but, there is alway a but isn't there?, you may have to use manual mode only. It depends on the settings of the camera, its all to do with f stops etc which is why I would say use in manual mode only.

Right now for the tech reason it can be used. The lens end that joins the camera the moving part inside the lens doesn't hit the TC. There is sufficient clearance for the combo to work.

As you can see the lens is fully retracted and has a Sigma 1,4 TC on the end of it, just to show you it can be done. This will give you more reach for a lot less cash. But as I said before its best to use manually whichever TC you decide on. The combo I have gives me up to 420mm

As you can see there is plenty of clearance even when on 70mm setting, so no chance of anything hitting it. A 2x TC will give you 600mm length but you might hit problems with light getting to the sensor and camera shake, which is why I went for the 1.4 TC instead

Re: Nikkor 70-300mm Lens Test

Bob that trick definately won't work with any other lens unless specified in writeups says a TC can be used.
