I remember it well. One water speed record being broken after another a few weeks/months later,and then this happening because of a small ripple in the water upsetting the boat. It took days to get the right conditions to try for the record and he was doing so well. If they had timed it on just one pass the accident would never have happened. I was only 10 years old at the time but it was such a huge news story everyone talked about it.

Very poignant Bazza.
I always get muddled up between him and his dad although both were before my time.
I didn't know these earlier speed records were at Ullswater - I know he hit 300mph when he flipped and died in the late 60s at Coniston water.
