Re: David - Fs Lipslide

Like it Tommy - think the composition is spot on, would work especially well as a poster on a wall!

What do you mean by b-footage?

Re: David - Fs Lipslide

Why would you post pictures that you're not happy with?

And could you perhaps tell us why this image isn't good enough for you?
This might help people interested in this style of photography.

And as you've put this in the critique request section, why should anyone bother giving you feedback on it, if you've already labelled it as sub-standard?

Just curious.

Re: David - Fs Lipslide

Maybe he likes it - but just doesn't feel it is as good as the stuff he's most proud of.

I probably feel that way about 99.9% of my photos!

Re: David - Fs Lipslide

I think Tommy shares his B Footage, because his "A" shots, go in magazines, so he can't share those until they are published? I might be wrong

Anyway, I love the lighting,it's a fab shot

(I actually sold some photos from a trip into the Gt Smokies in the Autumn, and until they are published, I can't put them on the internet, I have prints of them in my portfolio, but not online. Same as portrait work I have started doing, none of it is online, as they aren't my kids Also, he might not want anybody pinching his best stuff online)

Re: David - Fs Lipslide

I'm also in the same boat as far as that's concerned, and have previously stated in certain posts that these are the only images I can share at the moment. But Tommy hasn't mentioned anything about magazines or websites here. He just said that these are the shots that he's not as happy with.

Ok, maybe I didn't phrase my original questions properly

And I'm not being picky over this. I'm just curious.

I would just like to know why this image didn't make the grade. What is it about the shot, focus, aperture, lighting, angle of the snowboarder etc that stopped this shot from getting an "A-grade", because to the untrained eye like mine, it looks pretty much as good as anything else Tommy has posted, including some of the previous stuff that he says he's really happy with, including magazine shots and band promotional work.

A little more information from Tommy on this would indeed help other members, me included, rather than people just guessing as to why he doesn't rate it higher.

And the reason for bringing the critique question into it, was this: I thought the critique request section was here in order for us to benefit from other people's observations and opinions towards our images, thus improving our photographing technique as we went along. But Tommy has already labelled this image as sub-standard, without giving any reason why he thinks that, and without any real request for others to offer advice on how he could improve it.
Neither we, nor Tommy, have anything to gain by commenting on the above image at this time, which is why I asked "Why bother?"

Tommy, I actually think it's a really good image, even better than some of the other images that you've said you're happy with, which is why I'm really curious to find out why you don't like it.

Is there another frame from this sequence that did make the grade?

Re: David - Fs Lipslide

Thanks a lot everybody.

The reason why I call this B-footage is just that it's not as good as the other ones I shot at that location. The technical quality of the photo is the same, but this was one of his first tries on the rail, and he landed better tricks later that same session. I usually try out different angles and compositions, as well as lighting on every shoot, and although all of them are high enough standard for magazines and so on, there will always be some I'm more stoked on than others. And I know by experience that all of them will not make the print. So I post the ones I don't think will make the final cut.

And, I think I can say that the quality of my photos in general are way better now than it was last year. So all the photos I'm posting from now on, I think are a lot better than anything I've posted before.

I don't see how it's not helpful for anyone to comment on this picture just because I didn't say why it's B-rated. It's helpful for me to get feedback on it wether you know why I'm a 100% satisfied with it or not

And I am satisfied with it. I I weren't I wouldn't have posted it online for people to see it

I can't shoot sequences when using studio lights like this, so there's no other frames of that trick. I only have one shot at this, so the communication between me and the rider is extremely important. We both have to agree on what trick he's going for every time, so I can find the correct angle for that trick. If he stomps it and chooses to go for another trick, I will most likely have to find another angle to show the trick best possible.
