My First Elk Sighting

I've lived in Oregon now for 6 years. Until this morning I had never seen an elk in person. I've tried, going to elk preserves and wildlife areas, but no elk. I was shooting at Camp 18 this morning, early, when a herd of 33 elk was suddenly right in front of me in an open field. I was genuinely excited because I had my D7000 on a Black Rapid R7 strap on my hip, lens cap off & lens shade on. By the time I reached for my camera the elk had seen me and were on the run to the adjoining field. To my surprise they stopped, dead center in that field and stared at me. I had my 24-70mm on the camera so I was easily able to capture the whole herd. I then walked up to a 4 foot diameter log and changed lenses to my 70-300 as the elk continued to just stand there posing for me. I got off half a dozen frames and started to move forward before they bolted. What a thrill!

Bob.........................Your photos bring me great joy, your love of the art of photography inspires me and your descriptiveness [if thats a word] of each setting is like a storybook.

I do look forward to your posts.

Oh and the photos are always great too.

Thanks Jols. You can probably sense my excitement at what happened this morning. I can't believe my good fortune at this occurrence. I have more to process as I fired off 130 frames this morning, not all are elk. This is what makes photography such a great pastime. It never gets old and it fills my life with joy.

Re: My First Elk Sighting

Lovely stuff Bob.

Not just the pictures but your enthusiasm comes through in your post.

Much as I love my landscapes - I can relate to your words. Nothing can beat that feeling when you're suddenly faced with something out of the blue that makes the heart beat faster, the legs go to jelly and you have to get something despite suddenly becoming a jibbering wreck.

Perhaps that's just me LOL

Lovely shots Bob, so sharp and clear on what looks a dull day, also well done for getting it together at a moment when adrenaline must have been running high.

Thanks everyone. Ken it was just a heavy fog that happened an hour after sunrise. It burned off an hour after I returned home to become a bright sunny day, the bane of every photographer.

Re: My First Elk Sighting

Lovely! I know the feeling well, get it often with birds - that owl and the pied flycatchers I posted were grand examples of me nearly collapsing!
