What lens

I'm not sure if i've put this in the right section but here goes.

What single lens would/could you not do without and why? and, whats a good all rounder for a newbie starting out

I ask because, up to now i only have a basic canon 18-55 and a old canon 70-210 ( which doesn't always work) and with all the different lenses on the market, it gets very confusing as to what the beginner should be looking to buy.

Sorry if this has already been asked elsewhere.

Thanks

Re: What lens

I know there's better lenses out there but I couldn't do without my Canon EF-S 17-85mm. I would say I take most of my pics with it and it covers a good range for landscapes.

Re: What lens

I couldn't live without any of mine I think the one I use most is my... erm... nope - really about the same! My three most important lenses are my Nikkor 50mm f1.4, Sigma 50-500mm and my Nikkor 105mm f2.8 macro. I use them all about the same amount, and all are very important to my photography for different reasons.

Good thread!

Re: What lens

I'm pretty much at the same place as you, Andrea. Just a beginner with the kit EF-S 18-55 (which I'm quite happy with so far). My next purchase will be the sibling lens; the EF-S 55-250 (also known as the "nifty two-fifty"). While it is considered to be a fairly slow lens, the price is closer to what I'm willing to spend. Besides, it gets fairly decent reviews.

Good luck!

Re: What lens

Thanks for the replies. It’s certainly interesting to know that others have a few particular lenses, which they stick with for a lot of their shots.
I’ve only had my SLR camera for a few weeks and I’m sure I’m not the only beginner who’s looked at all the different lenses available, (along with the cost of them), and had a major panic attack, thinking we need to collect trillions of different lenses to get good results.

Re: What lens

my 'nifty fifty' seems to be on my camera the most, then I'll swap to something more specialised as needed.
I haven't had my kit lens on at all since getting the 50mm.

What kind of photography do you think you'll do the most? That will lead you towards what kind of lens to get next.

Re: What lens

Hi LM,
It's an in intereting question but since i've only used the camera less than a dozen times, i've not really photographed enough to know what appeals most.

I love old structures, particularly those where people would once live or work in.

i also like photo's which singles out something small (and sometimes overlooked by the eye), like a petal or leaf, to show detail......macro i think it's called?

However, i also like pictures which speaks a story. I once saw a picture which captured a city centre christmas scene, taken in black and white.
It captured christmas shoppers leaving a rather posh department store while next to them, lying on the ground, was a homeless young lad asleep.
That's the thing that first got me interested in photography. The photographer has the power to make us see things we don't always want to acknowledge.

Re: What lens

I could`nt do without my Tamron 70-300, because until I get around to suing Bennetts Electrical for the replacement stock lens that they owe me due to the original one imploding after just a few weeks, my Tamron is the only lens I`ve got.

It is dual purpose as it is a reasonable long range lens, as well as macro with a flick of the switch, and I now have an inexpensive +4 filter to get closer macro with it.

FWIW I mainly shoot action, [ dog agility and horses ], often at a fair distance but the 70-300 comfortably reaches the maximum size of the competition rings for those activities.
I do want to be able to take decent birds and lunar photo`s so I will need a much longer lens at some point but the Tamron is a very decent all rounder so far, I definitely feel it was the right choice , even when I do get the stock lens I`m owed and when I can eventually save up for a longer lens I think the Tamron will continue to be my primary lens for general use, don`t know if that helps or hinders your own considerations for your next lens
