35 Years on

Thought i would take a trip out to Wendover Woods in Herts today in the hope to see a little wildlife. Did not really get to see anything other than the odd Chaffinch but did have a nice walk through a bit of the woodland. Wendover Woods is situated on the outskirts of Tring and it covers 800 acres.

Whilst walking through part of the woodland you reach the highest point in the Chiltern hills, where this Cairn was erected.

It reads :

`This Cairn at a height of 876 ft (276m) marks the highest point on the Chiltern hills and was erected by the parish council of Aston Clinton and Halton. By The Chiltern Society, The Forestry Commission and the Royal Air Force - Halton, to comemorate the silver jubilee of Our Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Second in June 1977`

I would not usually photograph something like this but i thought due to the Diamond Jubilee this weekend i thought this was quite appropriate

Re: 35 Years on

Lovely habitat, i can imagine quite a few species of bird in that area, the sign looks like a bit of target practice goes on

Re: 35 Years on

Nice thought.

Last time I was there saw literally hundreds of Crossbills.

Re: 35 Years on

Also supposed to be a good site for Firecrests. Are the woods Herts or Bucks?

Re: 35 Years on

Well i would say Herts but might cross over the two borders as it is a big woodland area Richard. We always drive past on the way to the Tring reservoirs but it was the 1st time that we decided to go up there.
There is a trail called Firecrest trail, Crossbills and Firecrests are supposed to be common visitors there even if their uncommon for the South. It would be a place to explore just me for a few hours really.
I need to get used to different bird calls as well, quite a few i hear and can not ID the bird thats making the call. Other than the Chaffinch. Know that off by heart now.
