Getting to know YOu! - Kay

When did you get into photography ?
I have always love taking pictures, Hubby and I travelled quite a bit in the ‘90s’ I suppose that’s when I got interested in photo’s instead of just the holiday snaps, at the time I used a Olympus OM-3 SLR camera and a Canon AE-1P. I wasn’t interested in film processing; I didn’t really like the thought of all those chemicals. and I had some real bad luck with sending films away to get developed, example was, we travelled down to Gibraltar on our boat, in the bay of Biscay, we had a whale join us, he/she stayed with us for several days, I was in my element, I took 6 rolls of film, that’s all we had on board, ok so they probably wasn’t going to make the cover of the national geographic, but a certain print company lost the lot, it totally put me off photography for a while.
Some of my first photo’s taken with film cameras
taken in the 90s and scanned

one of my first landscape, which I still like to this day

and my favourite dog picture of Emma taken sometime in the 90s and scanned

Why the continued interest in photography ?
It was the digital age that has relit the passion for me.
Then several years ago I became ill and photography has given me a bit of escape from it, although sometimes I do get very frustrated, but it’s good for me to get out in the fresh air and enjoy the great outdoors and all what nature has to offer.

Your first camera ?
first film cameras Olympus OM-3 SLR camera, Canon AE-1P. first digital camera, Fujifilm FinePix A-series i think

Your current kit - views ?
Olympus E500 , lens 17.5-45mm, lens 70 – 300mm, tripod {still trying to get the hang of}, some old manual lens, but i got an adaptor and they do work, but don't seem to have the same sharpness.
we even still have the Canon AE-1P somewhere in the cupboard, i found some new films the other day, but they where so out of date
I have now got use to my Olympus, but I wish I had done more research before I bought it, I think now I may have gone for a Nikon, one day maybe I will get some new kit, but for now I need to stay with my Olympus.
Nikon coolpix compact camera – I am very impressed with this little camera, until yesterday it now won’t recharge, so it has gone back to Nikon today, thankfully it is still under the warranty. hopefully it will get sorted out, and I will be back to being able to carry it around with me.

Your favourite subject and why ?
Pets, Animals, Birds, Nature, flowers, wildlife, they are what I am interested in, but after spending time on the YOP forum I have thought more about, Landscapes /street and even some abstract photography, so hopefully this summer I want to get out and about to try out some new ideas.

Your dream location / assignment ?
Canada or Africa { well you did say dream} I really enjoy taking photo’s of wildlife so I suppose either of these locations would be pretty amazing,

Kit you couldn't live without ?
Other than the camera of course it’s my bag, I have tried several bags, but now I have a hama padded backpack type bag and it is a blessing for me to be able to get all the kit I need to carry around, and it is so easy to carry, as this kit gets heavy if your walking far, I suppose that’s more down to my own personal health issues, but at least it means I can still carry on taking photo’s other than in my garden

Kit you would like to have ?
Of course it’s got to be a bigger lens, {i mean more powerful} photographing birds etc it is very hard to always get close up and personal.

Most useless kit ?
At the moment I would say my tripod, I need to use it as I having some difficulties in holding my camera for extended periods of time {due to an ongoing illness} but I feel so restricted in movement, I get it set up then something lands behind me and I end up throwing the tripod to one side.

What constitutes a great image ?
For me, well I thought these four pictures say it better than I ever could

An Iconic Image ?
Any of the above, but there are millions and millions to choose from
this one is pretty amazing

Re: Getting to know YOu! - Kay

Continued......

Photography pet hate ?
At first photographers who looked down their noses if you didn’t develop your own pictures
now as time has moved on, I’ve come across a few photographers who seem to look down on anyone who hasn’t got the right or better say their brand kit, I always think it’s not the name on your camera that gets the right shot it’s you, but hey I only have an Olympus, so what do I know

Photography ambitions ?
This is a hard one, if I was 25years younger, then who knows,
but I suppose for me it’s about getting an image of an animal or bird to add to my collection, which I am contented with and trying some new types of photography

Your YoP wishes ?
I have found the forum so helpful and friendly, I still cannot believe that no one {well no one has said yet} they are fed up with seeing pictures of my dogs, sorry folks, but they are always with me, so they get photographed the most.
as for the future, I hope it stays as it is, I know change can be good, but I wouldn’t like to think YOP will end up like some of the photo forums.

Any other passions ?
My pets, wildlife, garden, horse rescue and of course hubby and the family, we have been married nearly 25 yrs and luckily we have quite similar interests, pleased to say he loves animals too!!
I’m always busy doing nothing, as hubby says, but it seems to take a lot of hard work to do nothing and have hobbies
