Kyrenia Harbour

I drove across the border into Northern (Turkish) Cyprus today and ended up on the Northern coast at a town called Kyrenia. I had lunch al fresco on the quayside, shopped for olives, spices and wine and generally chilled out before going on to Nicosia, the last divided city in the World, to walk around the old city bazaars at night. I finished my day with dinner on the streetside in the shadow of the grand mosque bathed in a 3/4 moon before recrossing the border and heading back home to Kolossi.

Here are a few images I took.

Kyrenia harbour with the castle in the background

a couple of brighly coloured fishing boats moored quayside

walking along the breakwater

Looking back towards the harbour

Fishing boats moored alongside the old harbour beacon

a motley collection of boats tethered by the inner jetty

this Turkish Cypriot flag has been carved on the mountainside which overlooks the Greek side of Cyprus - it's a deliberate goad by the Turks against the Greeks. Note the scale by comparing the village below

this is the grand mosque taken from a observation tower on the Greek side of Nicosia.

some of the delicious Cyprus sausages and pork loin you can buy in the bazaars and markets. They are made from pork, coriander seeds, and hot spices, before being left to soak in red wine for a month and then hung up to smoke.

Some of the colours of fresh fruit and veg, all locally grown in the sunshine, out on display in the market.

Re: Kyrenia Harbour

Very nice Jack, love the Mosque picture, you have really captured the business of the harbour, I really like the little scruffy boats it is a busy, but atmospheric (big word day)shot.

Lovely looking oranges, love oranges

Looks like a lovely old harbour.

Do you prefer taking pictures in sunny Cyprus or grey England? I suppose bright sunshine causes problems too.

Re: Kyrenia Harbour

I dont mind either Moonie - both have their merits; the difference here is I am able to get out with a camera 365 days a year - unlike the UK. The two major problems here are dust and sun. I have to be meticulous with cleaning and caring for my gear. Sunshine presents it's own problems, often a flash has to be used during the day, and washouts are all too common. It does mean though that I can cope well with slower lenses.
