I like the idea,
The childs arm reaching to the puppy is good, I think bringing some more light on to the subject to reduce the shadows would be nice.
Over all though, I like the idea and I like the shot.

I like it too - agree with Alan about the shadows... with them it gives the pic a 'sad'/lonely feel (which has it's place too) but I guess you wouldn't be going for that, hence more light will help lift the mood
