Tawny Owl

I 'd heard from the neighbours about this owl that lives in the field behind us, and finally saw it today. I imagined it to be big, but its only 'small' bird.

Re: Tawny Owl

Well captured.

We have Tawny Owls in the big trees at the end of the garden. At night they drive me bonkers. First you hear the female going (work with me here - I'm no Percy Thrower) Kee-ick, Keeee-ik then a moment later you hear the male's Woooo-oooh.

It's good fun as they reply to you when you do their noise. I've only ever seen them at night with the torch though.

Re: Tawny Owl

Nice capture. The ivy leaves add 'ecological validity' and further interest and lifts the overall colour of the image.

Tawny owls are surprisingly fairly easy to track to photograph: particularly in broad leaved woodland where they are noisily mobbed by other woodland birds giving away the location of a day roosting owl. The trick is to recce the woods beforehand for likely roost sites. (usually ivy clad boughs tucked close into the trunk) so you will already be familiar with roosting sites to plan your shots.
