Cold, Christmas, birdwatching.

Spent a few hours freezing my F.Stops off to get some bird shots. I have concluded I need better glass than I either have or can afford. This irks me...

1. Robin

2. Robin. Again.

3. Dunnock (Really need a better lens or a slower Dunnock!)

4.Blue Tit

5.Nut Hatch

6. Squirrel. Not *actually* a bird as such, but such a pretty pose

7. Chaffinch

8. Great Tit

9. Duck.

10. The pond

Thanks for looking.
I can't feel my feet any more...

Re: Cold, Christmas, birdwatching.

You don't need better gear, just better light. We all have our limitations - and believe me, a better lens is something I crave! Still, I have to make do with what I have and wait for good light! Best I can do at a long reach is f6.3 - which isn't great, and high ISO is obviously not ideal (better with the D700 - but the reach is less of course). I keep the widest aperture I can, and try and get the best light possible

Also - every one of these photos would help by getting on the same level as the birds photos looking down on them are often a bit... lacking. If you can get them on branches near you instead and work from there. Best way is a small feed station set up with appropriate twigs and branches for them to perch on, and just wait

Re: Cold, Christmas, birdwatching.

The problem is that I was in a commercial hide in an abbey ground, so *down* isn't really possible.
I do agree the light was not good for pinpoint and accurate colour reproduction. On the other hand there was a chap with a Nikon in the hide, his lens cost more than 3 months of my wages...and it was producing fantastic results
I'm going to try another Wildlife site in the marshes locally, which has other hides, there may be better angles.

Oh, and it may be a bit flippin' warmer too

Re: Cold, Christmas, birdwatching.

I'm inclined to agree with Zoundz - whilst lenses help they're sort of like the cherry on the cake. The main issues are light, getting to grips with the ISO limits of your camera and getting into the correct position.

Love the Nuthatch - I've still not caught one on camera.

A wonderful collection of some British birds. I really like the swan pose, he looks as though he was coming straight at you, and with a little bit of attitude.

cheers Marion

Oh he certainly was, but the attitude was *Here's my best side, now this, now pet me, now feed me NOMS now take another picture, now hang on whilst I hiss at the dog. Now pet me, now more NOMS, now more pictures, can I come home with you? Really I will be good and not poop!*
