So you want more Megapixels?

So you want more Megapixels?

Do you think a 120 MP Sensor would be enough?

I don't think it's intended for the general market, more for surviellance, military, arial use etc, but at 120 MP, can you imagine the size of the RAW files

Re: So you want more Megapixels?

Hello,

Did you not see the sensor Canon unveiled this week, it is 202 x 205mm. If you take the Canon 7D pixel density that works out at around 1.8 Giga Pixels

That should keep the pixel zoomers happy

At 200mm square, it won't be a very portable body

Re: So you want more Megapixels?

My first IBM PC in 1980 had 256k of RAM & no hard drive for $4800. I remember when PCs crossed the 1 gig threshold for hard drives. Now you can get a Terabyte drive for $200. Digital cameras came out with less than 640x480 resolution and some, like the Sony Mavica, used 3 1/2" floppy for storage. A digital Hasselblad uses a 50meg sensor, why not go to 120meg? It's progress. My first computer used a processor, an 8088 Intel that was an 8 bit processor. Now we have 64 bit and higher. Memory cards are cheap now so why now more resolution, speed and power?

The computer analogy is ok, but it the case of computers, an increase in speed, memory and storage was largely driven by more complex software. As people realised we could do more with our pcs, software complexity increased, and with it came the need for faster processors, and more memory (bigger hard disks and RAM)

However, the increase in Megapixels isn't really driven by any technical reason at this time, we all know that even 6Mpixels is enough for most things, and that even at 20 Mpixels people are complaining that this is showing the limits of our lenses. So where is this drive coming from? Comsumers? well maybe yes, while most camera manufacturers agree that the MPixel war is over (so they say publicly) there is very little else you can add to a camera that really shouts 'I am a new model'. Especially when you are trying to attract new customers. Look at mobile phones, they offer 8 and 10 Mpixel sensors now, it still really makes me laugh when I hear people say ' I have a new phone and it's got a xx Mpixel camera, I bet the photos will be really good' haha, I can wait to see the disappointment on your face

Inevitably pixel counts will rise, but unfortunately there isn't much else other than consumer/product lifecyles that is driving this.

Ironically, the growing Mpixel count of cameras is just one of a number of applications that is still having an affect on the good old PC, we need more and more storage to keep our files, especially with video functions in bodies now, and better software to edit with, so faster processors to cope with it all.

Can't wait to by a Pentium i99 with a Terrabyte of RAM and a couple of Petabytes of hard disk space

These are gigapixel photographs - nothing to do with the sensor. They're usually made up of hundreds of individual images.
