Grasshopper

These are one of lifes survivors, hard to comprehend that they have been around for the last 253 million years or so. I would hate to think what size they were back then though although they might of been a little easier to photograph. Like many insects they do not stay still for long.

Yes they are fascinating, i had not realized they had been around for that long either. Something else learned today is, if these were ones that could change color and lived in a high population then these Grasshoppers would be Locusts, i just though a Locust was a different insect as they fly more, whereas, even though GH`s can fly they very rarely do.



I just love their eyes, how they blend in with the body, image above was taken a few days ago, not sure whether its the same grasshopper. Only a youngster though, about 3cm in length, but saying that i have never seen any normal size GH`s in the garden ever so it could even be an adult.

I'm glad they are that size Mark and not 3ft long...*Shudders*

Imagine the noise they would make at that size rubbing their hind legs together Its bad enough listening to them at this size

Would of been nice if the 2nd image was better focused, it was a bit of a rush shot as each time i got too close he hopped off, yesterday though, think he was injured, as he was walking everywhere and i was able to get within a few inches of him.

Well done - they're not that easy to photograph They are such interesting beasties though!
